Best places to sell a pony?

Just wondering where everyone's prefered places to find a pony to buy are. I've posted on some FB groups and will be adding to preloved. Which are the best sites do you think?
I have a lovely 4yr old welsh A I'm too big to ride and two girls who aren't interested in the slightest! I need to size up. 😩

Pretty little soul. What area are you?

Minibea · 28/04/2026 13:36

Horse quest is where we found our pony recently, seems to have a lot of quality ponies on and actually gives you the phone numbers for the seller.

She is beautiful. We're in Lancashire

I'd also put the word out at your local riding school. They are often well placed to know which kids are looking for ponies to buy.

Balloonhearts · 28/04/2026 13:39

Horse quest is generally quite a safe bet.

H & H

It depends what you're selling her as and her history.

At her size/type a backed lead-rein show pony type with decent in-hand showing experience markets very differently to an unbacked pony with no showing background.

If she's something special, equestrian notice board and/or horsequest. If she's an unbacked project, Facebook and maybe dragon driving.

D332015 · 28/04/2026 13:53

Further to last post - I've been nosy and taken a look at your advert.

I would recommend getting some decent conformation pictures of her (stood square, untacked, side to the camera). You're making a point of her being a potential show pony, and that's what that demographic will want to see.

I'd also suggest getting her out to a couple of local in-hand classes - again, this will make her more attractive to that type of buyer.

Alternatively, if she was mine I'd consider a couple of weeks with a producer to bring her back into work. Some ridden photos/videos would make her much more marketable (and would make someone buying her as a kids pony feel more comfortable when it's time to stick a child on).

Shes somewhere in-between really. Really good show breeding but not been out herself as yet. Backed last year. Left for winter and ready to go. Good on the lanes, with traffic etc but needs schooling (just a bit confused about whats expected sometimes)

Thanks for that. I do have some side on pics but in dirty winter woolies from January time - I'll get some updated ones.
I have been thinking of sending her for schooling livery for a few weeks too. And have someone who wants to take her to some inhand local classes so may pursue that too

Local pony club, take her out to local shows in hand showing shows and make it known she’s for sale, if she’s got a green book she’ll get snapped up for FYFR

She has got a green book, looks like need to get her seen a bit - local shows it is!

i sold a pony last year.

the horse world seems to mostly exist on FB so tried there, on a few relevant groups. I got a little bit of interest but nothing that went anywhere.

A friend recommended Right Horse Right Home, the idea being there is an additional “application” step where the buyer has to almost sell themselves.

It definitely seemed to weed out people not really interested, he sold really quickly from there, first viewing made a decision on the spot.

I’d definitely use again if I needed to.

maxelly · 28/04/2026 16:10

She's very sweet. Sales livery with a good producer might be a good investment if you're hoping for a show home, as they'll get her presented properly and professionally (with all the videos and confo shots etc) which will appeal to the market you're after and probably enhance her value by more than what you'll pay for the service.

Otherwise yes Horsequest I would say is the most popular site all round and particularly for competition ponies. Preloved and dragon driving are definitely more for the lower end of the market, I wouldn't go on there looking for a show type myself unless I specifically wanted more of a diamond in the rough, but then would expect price to reflect that and as seller I would worry about having to shift through a lot of unsuitable buyers. Facebook groups are good but I'd see if you can get onto specific Welsh and native / M&M showing groups rather than your more general local ones. Word of mouth through PC of course always a classic although if she's very green your market there probably is more limited...

I’d not bother with preloved. Horsequest is good.

Id try a few more FB groups especially ones targeted to natives, and just be prepared to ignore the “wud u take £7.56 inc tack and transport hun xxxx” type comments

People can be really gormless sometimes...see @Lastqueenofscotland2's example. I am very pleased that my days of selling are far behind me. It was bad enough pre-internet. I hope you find someone for her @LAM1407

Annonydormouse · Yesterday 15:07

I am quite relieved that you're so far away though @LAM1407 as I've not long lost my old pony and I could easily have been tempted by a little thing to show occasionally and do in hand work with. I swore I wouldn't but I'm a sucker for a cute welsh pony face.

Edited

I think you should do a road trip 😄 I got her from someone in Lincolnshire, all day road trip with my two girls in tow - that was fun 🤣
