Rug recommendation

Hi everyone, I’m a returning horse owner. It’s been decades so things have changed! I need a 200g rug with neck cover suitable for night turnout (he has a flowing mane 😂). Maybe one with extra removable layer for colder nights etc. Horse is fully clipped. Thoughts very gratefully received. Thank you!

What sort of build? Some fit different types better than others.

FuzzyFetlocks · 05/02/2026 18:24

I have one of the new 1200d Weatherbeetas and I am pleased with it. We have had some rotten weather, including yet more snow, sleet, rain and wind. My mare is nice and dry under it.

This one has lots of adjustment at the front as it has buckles and clips (as the previous poster said, you don't mention what build your horse is) and the reflective bits are very handy for when it's dark.

Ah sorry - he’s a chunky cob, 14h, 6ft rug.

I have been told that Gallop Trojan Xtra are good for cob types, or Ruggles. The Weatherbeeta might be OK as it is adjustable at the chest - I don't have a cob though.

Thank you @FuzzyFetlocks !

To show how different in build my little grey is, she is 15hh and in a 5ft 9 rug!

sanityisamyth · 05/02/2026 22:16

Always swear by Horsewear rugs. The Rambo is an amazing range.

FuzzyFetlocks · 05/02/2026 22:18

You'd have to get the big neck version or a chest extender with such a chunky cob though.

ZebedeeStan · 05/02/2026 22:28

Gosh thank you everyone!
A lot to think about.

Weatherbeetas are fine on my chunky ID. Have a look at premier equine they are pricey but worth it

Errolwasahero · 05/02/2026 22:35

Ruggles are excellent and have a line for heavy horses.

We've got a 14h chunky cob that fits a 6ft rug and bought the weatherbeater rug posted above.

Fits her perfectly and takes a liner too.

Not cheap but the quality of weatherbeater rugs is excellent.

ZebedeeStan · 05/02/2026 22:46

Taking this all in - thanks again everyone!

Another vote for Horseware. Brilliant rugs and they do bundles with liners and necks.

TheUsualChaos · 05/02/2026 22:50

Haven't owned horses in a good while but my go to was always Horseware. Had Rambo rugs that lasted years and years

ZebedeeStan · 06/02/2026 05:24

Gosh just looking at the Horseware website. So much choice. Need to study it in the morning! Like the idea of flexibility. From what seller says, he can get a bit itchy. Doesn’t come with anything so I need a plan! And a wardrobe.

We have a chunky 13.3hh in 5.9ft rugs. The Swish chunky range is working well and great quality. We got a 0g with detachable neck and seperate liner. The liners can also be used as stable rugs but I think they run slightly small, so go up one size for them.

RedPony1 · 06/02/2026 10:26

Masta Fieldmasta has a pleated neck that gives them more room for mane

britnay · 06/02/2026 10:40

I have a chunky 14hh irish cob who takes a 5ft rug too. He is young and very rough on his rugs!
My favourite so far are Swish rugs. They seem to fit his cobby body the best, and have withstood his best attempts to rip them. I also love the fact that they come in bright colours, so I can spot him from far away! I've got him in bright pink, and my other gelding in the bright orange.

Yes my boy is young too!! So much great advice here. Thank you!

If your horse is itchy (how itchy exactly?) it might also be worth investing in a decent sweet itch hoody for the spring, even if your boy doesn't have full-blown sweet itch. It is upsetting if you like the flowing mane and they rub it badly.

It would also be worth asking the previous owner what brand of rugs fit him.

Kenji · 06/02/2026 15:27

Love Swish rugs, they're so versatile. Can be used as both stable and turn out rugs, detachable neck covers and different weight liners for changing weather conditions. Great quality too.

Coblet · 08/02/2026 20:30

Horsewear Rambo rugs are well worth the investment unless you see horse ownership as a short term plan. They hold their value secondhand as well or you could try to buy secondhand.
I have turnouts that are almost 30 years old and have been used on multiple horses. I prefer to put a slightly too big Rambo on a pony than buy a cheaper alternative. They never seem to rub.
If pony is ‘itchy’ it is best to have two fly sheets that cover the neck and tail. These can be washed in a normal washing machine and a fresh rug weekly is best. If itchy horses get greasy it can make it worse and if unrugged then full blown sweet itch is more likely to develop. My ds had a 12.2 unclipped pony with sweet itch. She only needed the two fly rugs as they kept the worst of the winter weather and mud off her as well.
If you feel you will need a waterproof winter rug start with a zero fill unless pony is clipped. If clipped get liners too which can be used as stable rugs as well.

ZebedeeStan · 09/02/2026 07:38

Thank you again. This is so helpful and much appreciated. I’m going to borrow from YO for the first week or so, to assess, and then go shopping!
