Not really a TAAT but another stupid question

I did not want to derail @CmonBobby's fascinating thread so hope no-one minds if i start my own.

This is more a question DH keeps asking me. What happens to the hooves of wild horses? Why do they not grow and curl up and eventually cripple them like we often see with neglected domesticated horses. I always sort of whitter vaguely about the constant movement along ground wearing the hoof away but truth is i'm not sure.

Most of my native herd that live on open moor all year round have a farrier check up once a year, varied terrain and constant movement keep the hooves in great order.
A couple do need more frequent attention, in part because their feet weren't great to start with, and they dont load/use evenly.
Most domestic horses just dont get the opportunity to wear their hooves naturally

wild horses are moving miles and miles each day, to grazing and water, over a wide variety of terrain; also their hooves have developed from birth doing this, so their natural gait landing heel first means proper shapes, good heels and frogs so that toes are not pushed out forwards. Also varied grazing rather than just grass....

@Catroo oh I wish I could put mine on open moor! #jealous 😆
