Ignoring the fact it looks like spaghetti junction (I plant to re do it this weekend) does the actual battery thing look ok to be left like this when on? And how do you know it's dead? Apart from no more ticking..or is that the only way you can tell?

Are the wires actually all live electric wires?

BlueyAndBing0 · 01/12/2025 19:16

This is what I mean, I’ve never seen a set up like it lol! I can hear it ticking but other than that, I’m not about to test 😆

Are Your live wires touching your posts?! I can’t tell if those are the ones on the live fence?
You need a fence tester, as the owner of a serial escaper it’s a game changer. You can just walk around holding it near the fence and it’ll tell you if it’s working properly.

I think they are yes! It’s insane I know, but I just don’t know how dangerous it is

Will def purchase this, thank you!

It will just short the whole thing out if it’s wrapped around wooden posts, and then it wouldn’t work properly. I’ve had to become a pro at fencing as I’ve got a mare who will be out at the slightest hint that the fence is off, fortunately we are on mains now but the hours I’ve spent checking and re-fencing over the years is unreal 🤣

BlueyAndBing0 · 01/12/2025 19:38

Oh gosh I feel like this might be me! Shetland mare here who just seems to barge it down and then legs it onto the sheep field which is massive Hmm prone to lami too so it’s real good fun!

It literally won’t work if it’s touching anything other than metal. The idea is to make a line, or a circuit which is attached to the energiser which is attached to the battery. Try to simplify it

Somersetbaker · 01/12/2025 20:54

It's not dangerous, it may not work and it's highly likely the battery will be stolen if it's just left out in the open like that. Locally we've had the batteries, that are secured with massive padlocks, nicked from temporary traffic lights .

BlueyAndBing0 · 01/12/2025 21:42

I suspect it’s not working because of the set up then as it’s a new battery and Shitland still escaping to sheep field. Lucky we don’t really have to worry about securing things where we are.

Yeah, you cannot have the electric tape touching anything apart from the plastic insulators. If it touches the wooden posts, or some foliage, then it becomes grounded at that location and will become a lot less effective.

Its also very important to have a very very good grounding rod. It needs to be at least 2ft into the ground and the soil around it needs to be kept damp for maximum kick :D

Serencwtch · 07/12/2025 20:12

That's going to arc into that wood & will drain the battery very quick prob in a few hours.

Do you have an earth stake - I can't see one in the pic , that's essential.

Touching electric fencing isn't dangerous it just stings. Depends how much power you have going through it but I just test mine with the back of my gloved hand.

TalulahJP · 07/12/2025 20:29

You need to buy screw in rubber coated hooks (metal underneath) and put them in all the fence posts then undo all the tape and feed it through so all it’s touching is the rubber bits and not the wood.

you need a big metal pole thing to stick into the ground and attach a wire to the fence to earth it. I can remember where that goes but Google will tell you.

We used to hide the battery under a container or large bucket secured with bricks or something to keep it protected from horses and weather.

RedPony1 · 12/12/2025 10:00

i need to know if you fixed this - the photo stresses me out 😂

Feelingsunny · 14/12/2025 17:05

Google 'well installed electric fence' and AI gives a great description of how it needs to be. A little bit of investment is needed, and a fence tester for when it's done to let you know when you need to charge your battery. You can get some fantastic solar energisers that charge their own batteries, which I've found work even in winter as long as out in a light area.

britnay · 14/12/2025 18:41

@BlueyAndBing0 Please tell us you've fixed it :D
