Fussy eater - feed additions

We have a Welsh section A who is on a feed of spillers daily balancer and mollichaff light, with an addition of half a scoop of garlic in her two feeds.
I'd like to wean her off the garlic onto something a bit better for her long term (only had her about 7 weeks) I've tried feeding her without it but she just kicks her feed over. I was warned she was a bit fussy and loves her garlic! (As well as copious amount of polo's, which I've cut down, she was a bit nippy and expected a treat each time I looked at her!)
Anything people can recommend to entice her eating without the garlic, been thinking of mint or fenugreek but not sure.

Sorry, not helpful at all as I'm not horsey, but she has such a sassy, elegant princess pose, I think you'll struggle to make her eat anything she doesn't want.

Can I just ask why you want to take her off the garlic? I didn't know it was bad for them.

I expect you've tried cutting it down gradually so she gets less of it.

Edited to add she is very lovely, and agree with PP that she looks like a diva.

Apparently it can cause anemia if too much given or over a long time.
Yes tried to cut down though shes not getting loads, probably need to find something to mix together then cut off the garlic.
She is a bit of a diva. Typical welshie!

I got dried mint from my feed store it smells really nice!! I was trying to hide medication and it didn't work for me unfortunately.

I’ve never known a Welsh A that didn’t polish off everything you put in front of them, so I can’t advise, except to say have you just tried feeding her without the garlic? I cannot imagine that such a pony will refuse to eat! She will eat the balancer and Mollichaff eventually.

What about sugar beet. Thats apparently delicious.

If you were warned about not withdrawing it as the pony loves it I’d suggest the previous owner tried to stop and was unsuccessful 🤣

I think if you follow the manufacturers instructions a garlic supplement will be fine. Mine had it for years. Was is his 30s no issues. I think it’s raw garlic that couod be problematic.

Yeah was thinking of adding some sort of sugar beet, if that fails I'll have at least tried a few ways. Not the end of the world either way I suppose. Good point re the fresh garlic probably being more of an issue.

I'd be wary of adding anything like sugar beet - it's quite calorific. Honestly I'd just keep on with the garlic for ease 😂

FluffMagnet · 01/12/2025 12:51

I've never heard that about garlic, and have added to my feeds on and off over the years with zero problems. Fenugreek is meant to help encourage them to eat, but I'll be honest that none of mine have had that problem and it is stopping them from eating that is the issue. Why don't you try her on the Mollichaff Herbal? Sugarbeet won't be your friend if you want her on a light foodstuff.

Mumofyellows · 01/12/2025 19:24

My Last horse was anaemic and I was advised not to feed her garlic. Try mint, all of mine have loved it, or something like dengie molasses free healthy hooves which is a bit tastier than chaff.

Graciously · 01/12/2025 19:27

Mine have a tiny bit of fast fibre mixed with a low calorie chaff (hi fi molasses free) and some baileys fibre treat things on top. And I don’t feed from the hand. My ponies would be really nippy. If I did. If your pony kicks the feed over consider feeding from an over the stable door bowl
