Livery yard owners dog

Hi, I’ve recently moved to a new livery yard. On viewing the yard I asked if I can bring my dog and walk round the farm ride. All was good they said that was fine.
well since moving on there the livery yard owners dog has attacked mine twice when getting out the the car, she literally runs out of nowhere and goes for her, teeth baring and everything. I have a very friendly lab, keep her on the lead, I’ve tried keeping her in the car and waiting until I no the dogs not about but it’s not always possible as it comes out of nowhere.
i know I could walk her elsewhere but due to time I normally walk her whilst my daughter mucks out and I did ask the question when I moved on.
im just a bit stuck on how to deal with it, I feel like the yard owners will just say, if you don’t like it, leave her in the car. I want to speak to them about it as I don’t feel this the right when I’m paying to be on there, dogs tend to go alongside horses, other people have dogs on the yard but I’m not quite sure what happens there. I tried asking what time the dog is out they said around 6 but it’s happened again today at around 3.
I don’t want my dog getting nervous around other dogs because of this but I also feel I should be able to take her with me, especially as I asked before I moved on.
Any ideas on how to deal with this?, where do I stand?

Tbh I'd just look for something else.

If taking your dog to the yard is a deal breaker for you then you need to look for a new yard . I’ve been on various yards over the last 45 years and only one has been dog friendly so I don’t think it’s a given that dogs and horses go together and as it’s their yard then their dog is obviously more entitled to be there than yours .

It’s their yard and their dog. Either you leave your dog at home or in the car, or you find another yard.

TBH you’re very lucky you’re allowed to have your dog there as it is.

Can you access the farm ride without taking your dog through the yard? Or drop your daughter then walk the dog elsewhere?

No I can’t access else where, every yard I’ve been on over the last 15 yrs has allowed dogs on leads. It’s just annoying that I asked them and they never mentioned they had n aggressive dog.
yea that’s my thinking, there dog, there yard but very annoying. Time is really tight and going the dog is a bit of a deal breaker for me but I don’t want to up route the horses and one is currently on box rest after being kicked in the field 😭

Can't you leave your daughter to muck out, drive a bit up the road and walk the dog from there?

NarnianQueen · 13/09/2025 13:12

Drop your daughter off, drive 2 minutes down the road, do your walk there.

Pricelessadvice · 13/09/2025 13:45

I’m afraid you can’t do much.
I don’t allow my liveries to bring their dogs on my yard because of my yard cat but I do let people know this before they move on. Your YO should have been clearer that their dog isn’t friendly towards other dogs.

Yes that’s what il have to do, I just don’t think it’s right to have an aggressive dog running around. I normally tie the dog up whilst I’m at the yard or have her on the lead whilst I watch my daughter ride. It’s just annoying as l now have to have her sitting in the car for hours or leave her at home. Tbh I’m regretting my decisions moving at the min..It is what it is though…

Their yard, their dog. Unfortunately I think the only option is to not have your dog there. Complaining about their dog will only cause you issues
