Advice needed red mark on muzzle after riding 😭

I have a young horse who's five she's very inexperienced and I've done very little with her but have backed her myself in October and then started riding her in march with gaps as taking things really slowly. Tonight she was napping at the field gate where her herd are and wouldn't move, spinning and rearing. I rode through it and because she was so nappy and nervous I took her on a longer circular route rather than the shorter route I originally planned. Although she kept trying to nap we got home in one piece and she was quite calm by the end of the hour. I took off her bridle and saw a red mark next the her mouth on one side. I always check her after riding and this is the first time I saw this. Very upset as obviously it's been sore to ight riding her. Advice needed. Thanks

Sudocrem will do it!

Blob of antiseptic on it then check her tack. That shouldn't be happening, even if she's acting a right knob and yanking on it. Something must be sharp or rough on the inside and rubbing her.

Anything new or unusual growing in her field? If not a tack rub it could be a burn/ reaction to something she’s eaten, for example some horses can get a rash from eating buttercups.

Check there's not a sharp peice on her bit somewhere. As someone has already said, sudocrem is brilliant for minor issues.

What noseband do you use? Do you strap her mouth shut?

Cowparsley1 · 08/08/2025 23:03

Do you use a flash? If so, if she was gobbing due to napping etc it could’ve rubbed her (though if it did, the flash was too tight) I’ve had this happen once before when a horse I was schooling for someone was dicking about for 45 mins, a bit of sudocrem and a very lose noseband sorted it!

I’d assume that was from a loose ring snaffle or other kind of bit pinching . Your probably had to use the bit more than normal and it won’t take much on a youngster. It’s not even necessarily from anything fitting badly if she’s sensitive. Bit guards might help
