Injections - positive stories please

Can I have some positive stories of steroid injections please?

Purchased a horse 7 weeks ago who passed a vetting but has just been diagnosised with arthritis. She’s being injected tomorrow 🙏🤞

She doesn’t have it bad thank god. But the vet was just worried as after 2 week rest she was lamer than before but I think it’s because she hadn’t done anything and the weather/hard ground.

Please give me positive stories. we had to retire our other girl in January so absolutely heartbroken.

Some people will have good stories, personally I don't like injecting into joints just so we can ride them. I have friends who have done it with success but it comes with risk and I wouldn't ever inject for mine.

How old is your horse?

I have seen steroids used very successfully. Most top horses are injected (rightly or wrongly) in some way.
I probably wouldn't be jabbing a horse that has severe arthritis in order to ride but soundness improves all areas of a horses life not just their ridden career.

Honestly I'd listen to your vet, give the jabs a go and if you're not comfortable just don't continue them.

So vet has came out this morning, said that it’s just the start of arthritis and usual wear and tear. She’s 16 and he said it isn’t as bad as you’d expect for her age. We’ve injected 3 areas today.

she absolutely loves ridden work, she thrives on it and has been completely lost the last 3 weeks.

fingers crossed it works

If the steroids work it might be worth considering Arthramid as a longer term solution.

I’ve had my pony’s hocks injected when he was a similar age with good ish results. But the biggest improvement was changing his management. He has moved to a yard where he has year round daily turnout and the majority of his work is long hacking with some fast canters etc. He is 21 now and the soundest he ever has been his whole life, he is still able to jump, do xc training, the odd competition and hasn’t been injected since he moved 3 years ago. I’ve owned him since he was 3 so know his full history, he has always looked slightly dodgy on his hocks due to his conformation.

If your mare was worse after box rest, then definitely long and low impact work will help the most. Good luck!

16 is a great age for a horse just starting to need a bit of maintenance. Injections have a high chance of working and you're doing them for great reasons. Good luck!
