Roughly how much would you expect to pay for a new saddle for 14.2hh, all purpose?

My horse is slightly bigger but I paid £1250 for a 17inch GP.

£1100 £-1250 in my very recent experience of buying a 16.5 inch

No need for a new saddle, you can get second hand ones delivered on trial from several places on the internet. Book your saddler to check the fit and adjust bars and flocking.
I recently paid £600 for a nearly new Kent and masters gp. Then paid saddler £30 to fit it.

It’s a bit of a piece of string question 😉

I bought a new Ideal GP saddle for my new horse a few months ago - it was the one which fitted him best and was most comfortable for me. It wasn’t the most expensive one I tried, nor the cheapest - I think it was around £1750. Remember you’ll also need a girth, stirrups and stirrup leathers - again, these can vary wildly in price.

Yes it all depends, if you don't mind synthetic and are lucky enough to have a horse (and your own bum!) that is easy to fit you might get away with spending under £500. But if you want full leather and a larger size and/or more mid range brand it would be more like £1000-£1500 and you could easily end up spending £2000 or more if you or the horse ends up liking a fancy one best. I've always bought second hand wherever possible because saddles are so blinking expensive, you often get very good quality that way and it's the fit that matters most IMO not whether it's new...

First and foremost, it is so important to get any saddle properly fitted by a competent saddle fitter.

Price wise, it varies so much. You can get them for a few hundred pounds, right up to £5,000 + - which in my opinion is an utterly ridiculous price tag! Big brands command price tags to match unfortunately.

My DH is a traditional saddle maker, and his saddles are around the £1750 mark.

There are a few companies who offer saddles on trial, so this may be worth considering too.

There are some truly shocking saddles out there - both second hand and new ones. Do your research, look for reviews, and ask for peoples opinions if you find a particular saddle you like.

If you choose one with an adjustable gullet you can then adjust the width when saddler comes to fit. My saddler suggested 3 adjustable makes which would suit my horse. I bought one nearly new for £700 (new price £1300), saddler checked fit and will come back in 3 months to adjust/reflock if needed.
Not all adjustable saddles fit all horses/ponies though. I had a synthetic wintec for my daughter's pony (£80 second hand) but the shape was wrong for him so he now has a Kent & Masters (£600 second hand)

How long is a piece of string?
I paid £2k for my most recent saddle. You can get second hand and cheaper makes.

Most importantly is that it must fit correctly.

I contacted saddler and sent photos of her before he came. I explained the size she was in was too big and he brought a selection of saddles that were the colour I wanted and budget etc. the price of these varied from £400 to £700. In the end I went with the £700 one as it was an absolute bargain, is adjustable and fitted perfectly (her and me). She has changed shape particularly the last couple of weeks so I am getting him back to recheck.

I bought a brand new thorowgood in February for my 14hh Forester. It was £500. It was the cheapest of the 3 we tried but suited his shape best.
