Body protector for child?

DD is 8, and shares a safe pony. She hacks and schools, and pops the occasional cross pole. When I was a child, body protectors were for Badminton riders! But now it seems most kids wear them for every day riding. Should I shell out for one for DD? I know they don't necessarily prevent broken bones or spinal injuries. Is it worth it? I'm aware I am probably out of date (she does have a well fitted, new Charles Owen hat).

As a physio who deals with spinal injuries I never allowed DD to ride without her body protector. Absolutely not worth the risk, accidents can happen even on a ‘safe’ pony. They average around £100 - your child’s safety is worth it.

She had both Airowear and Racesafe - the Racesafe one was pricier but far more comfortable.

Really helpful, thank you. That is just what I wanted to know, if they are worth it if not. Also, good to know re comfort. So it's not going overboard then
