Country boots or riding boots

I've recently started having riding lessons, wearing some short jodhpur boots but would prefer the support of a longer boot. What do people prefer for day to day riding, country boots or riding boots?

Country boots aren't designed to be ridden in ie chunky gripping soles. Riding boots have smooth soles + small heel to prevent your foot getting stuck.

Riding boots!

I have had several pairs of Ariat boots, but I’m a huge fan / recent convert to Bareback footwear. They’re online only and very helpful on the phone, so worth a chat.

You need either jodhpur boots or riding boots to get the right sole that will slip through the stirrup when you want to about getting your foot stuck in the stirrup.

I prefer long riding boots, but use jodhpur boots and gaiters a lot.

Thanks all, I was worried I'd look s a bit "all the gear and no idea" wearing proper riding boots but they're obviously best for riding. Now I just need to find a pair with a generous calf width, they all look very slim!

Short jodh boots + half chaps are the way forwards

Ariat have some good crossover country boots that are suitable to ride in that sound like they'd be worth you looking at

Jorvik1978 · 31/03/2025 20:54

Yes, short boots and half chaps are your answer.
Ariat Telluride/terrain are my boot of choice, but as have jod boots already, you just need to pick up some chaps.

I like riding boots that have the more country boot look - love my Toggi Calgary's. I also have a pair of Moretta which are more casual boot style. As Pp said, Ariat also have various styles more country but with riding soles

JustWalkingTheDogs · 31/03/2025 21:03

Some country boots you can ride in, smooth soles etc. I personally prefer them as I can wear them to do various yard jobs without getting my feet wet and mine have steel toe caps

renovationqueen · 01/04/2025 14:59

I have a pair of the ariat ascent boots that are like a trainer on the foot - if you're after comfort honestly cannot recommend them enough they're much comfier than long leather boots.
If you've got jodhpur boots already you could just get some leather half chaps?

BeakyFlinders · 01/04/2025 15:34

I like jodhpur boots and half chaps. The convenience of a boot for lower leg cover but I find it gives more flexibility and responsiveness in the ankle. I feel restricted in a full length boot.

RedPony1 · 01/04/2025 16:22

My Country boots are also made for riding, so when i'm only hacking i don't bother changing them.

But for anything else its proper riding boots :)

Serencwtch · 01/04/2025 20:53

I much prefer riding in country boots - as long as they are designed for riding with a decent sole.

I have Ariat Grasmere (long ones with laces at sides) & love them. Also Ariat terrain (short ones with zips)

I hack a lot & do endurance & TREC so ride a lot in them. I only wear 'proper' boots for the occasional lesson or riding club dressage etc.

I walk & do yard work in them all day & really rate them.

A short boot and gaiters/ half chaps fan here, good on price points as well, look smart, comfortable, more flexible at the heel etc etc
