How many rugs does your horse have in their wardrobe?

Newhorse · 04/02/2025 18:15

I’m just contemplating buying another rug for my (stabled at night) horse. I currently only have 1 x 50g turnout rug and 1x 100g liner. Plus a waffle cooler, thermotex, fly and waterproof rug.
How many do you have for yours (and what are they?)

Oh God I have way more than I realised 🙈:
Coolmasta
Waffle cooler
2 x fleeces (1 x travel + 1 x home)
Show rug
Zero fill detach a neck turnout
2 x 50g turnout (1 x fixed neck + 1 x detach a neck)
100g detach a neck turnout
200g detach a neck turnout
100g liner
100g stable
200g stable
Exercise sheet
Walker rug
Fly sheet x 2
Waterproof fly sheet x 2

As horse is now retired this is ridiculous so this weekend's job is to sort + sell rugs!!!!

LostInAMist · 04/02/2025 18:26

I have three horses, they live out 24/7. They are the usually "soft"? breeds (Arab, WB, ISH)... They have a fly sheet each and a zero fill detach-a-neck each... That's it! And they only wear the no fills if it's cold, wet and windy.

ArcticBells · 04/02/2025 18:29

No idea as I keep finding ones I didn't know I had or had forgotten about

maxelly · 04/02/2025 19:23

I'm quite good actually, I mean I spend a ton on washing, repairing and replacing rugs because mine is such a destroyer of them but I try to keep it to 6 maximum which as much as I can comfortably store - 2 each of fleeces/coolers, stable rugs/polys and turnouts. He has slightly different weights in the polys and turnouts, and one turnout has a removable neck so enough variability IMO for different weather conditions. No fly rug as he isn't bothered by flies and it would just be one more thing for him to ruin, I embrace the spring/summer months when he can be naked 24/7 and I can stop worrying about the consent rips and missing straps (and start worrying about constantly bathing him as he's grey and permanently dirty). He does have a third smart new fleece atm that was a Christmas present, I was going to keep it 'for best'/shows but then I realized (a) I don't really go to shows any more anyway (b) his older fleece is currently more hole than rug so probably can't be salvaged, I should just bin it and put the new one into circulation really...

WorriedRelative · 04/02/2025 19:36

Your poor horse is deprived, you need to urgently buy many many more pretty rugs.

Mine has more than I can list here. In my defence she is hunter clipped, feels the cold easily we are on a cold exposed hillside, and she goes out whatever the weather. As a result she often wears two rugs or a rug plus liner.

In current rotation I have 2x heavyweight turnout rugs, a medium turnout, one 400g stable rug, one 300g stable rug, one 200g stable rug, one light weight stable rug used as a liner at this time of year. A 200g and a 300g liner. A fleece cooler and a smart travel fleece. A waterproof warm exercise sheet, and a fleece exercise sheet. A string vest sweat sheet for after baths.

Fly sheets, cotton sheets, no fill rain sheets and lighter turnout rugs have been packed away for winter.

There are a few additional rugs kept as spares that I haven't listed 😯

My sister has an exracer like this, gets a bit warm in a 100g rug in the depths of winter. My sister loves a fancy rug and gets miffed she can't use them all.

I'm actually much more happy to use the same old plain navy rugs until they die and not buy lots of alternatives. However my horse needs ALL the rugs because she wants to be out as much as possible in all weather but has a pathetic coat and drops weight in the slightest cold breeze.

LostInAMist · 04/02/2025 20:00

@WorriedRelative at the moment they are all unclipped, and have the most lovely woolly mammoth coats! The girly tends to run hot and prefers being naked, and the boys just see rugs as a new way to rough house with each other, so I'm saving myself the money and frustration by leaving them unclothed too.

I don't blame you! If you can manage them naked that's great. Mine is just a bit high maintenance!

@WorriedRelative the boys would love to be high maintenance, but let themselves down by acting like a pair of feral clowns

Lolypoly14 · 04/02/2025 20:21

I’ve no idea how many to be honest. I had a bit of a rug habit a few years ago and acquired an embarrassing amount

I know I have 2 of each turn outs (all with necks) 2 rain sheets, 2 light weights, 2 medium weights and 2 heavy weights. Plus a couple of light weights without necks.

Stable rugs - I’ve got 2 light fleeces and 2 mediums - if it’s cold-cold, I chuck a fleece under a medium.

She’s a chronic mud wallower, poo sleeper and rug ripper so I like to have a spare in case one is still wet/ripped/covered in poo stains.

She’s unclipped at the moment but a bit of a princess in the rain and wind and will stand moaning in the mud at her gate if out in the cold without a rug.

It hasn’t been cold enough for a good few years to need any of the heavy weight ones so I should stash them in the loft out of the way.

I’ve also got about the same amount for my old girl - I lost her 2 years ago and still haven’t done anything with her stuff

WelshPony · 04/02/2025 20:30

My cob has a cooler and a wardrobe of turnouts to suit every weather. So two zero fills, one 100g, one 200g and one 300g. Then I also have 100g and 200g liners. These were shared with my mare years ago and are now shared with my new horse. Fortunate they have all fitted the three of them and being rambos are going strong after circa 25 years. If your horse lives out you do need decent turnout rugs and spares so they can go off for repair and reproofing.

Pleasedontdothat · 04/02/2025 20:39

I’m just building up Timmy’s rug collection 😉. He’s clipped and piebald with large white patches so currently has no fill, 100g and 200g turnouts, 100g and 200g stable rugs, a travel fleece, a dry rug and a cotton stable sheet to wear overnight in the summer if he’s going somewhere he needs to look presentable the next day. My daughter’s horses are all in 6’3” rugs so they basically share her (large) collection but Timmy’s only in 6’ so he’s had new (to him at least) rugs. I factored in the cost of rugs, tack, vetting etc when setting my budget before I bought him.

plominoagain · 04/02/2025 20:42

5 horses . 4 have had rugs ( 2 warmbloods , one older Arab, one 43 year old ) and the other definitely does not need rugs of any kind.

3 bigger horses have all had , 2 lw , 2mw and 2 hw stable rugs (6) , plus ditto turnouts (12) plus extras as spare spares , so about another 6 . Plus various coolers , travel rugs , exercise sheets for the 3 wusses , and the old string sweat rugs so useful for thatching - I’d reckon about 30 in total ? Have just bought new horse which means haven’t really needed to buy any at all .

katmunchkin · 04/02/2025 20:49

My traditional cob has a 50g, 200g and a 200g, all with detachable necks, 2 fleeces and a cooler. She lives out 24/7, regardless of the weather, and is trace clipped in winter!

TheNinthLock · 04/02/2025 20:54

Oh crikey - sturdy and hairy native who lives out 24/7 has:
300g turnout with neck (used once, he got too hot)
200g turnout with neck (used only if prolonged below 0)
100g turnout with neck (most used)
50g turnout no neck (freebie from fellow livery)
Two no-fill rainsheets, one has clip-in liner
One waffle

He’s a pampered mud-monster 🙈

edited to add - he is partially clipped and is getting on a bit in years - his wardrobe has grown with age!

Newhorse · 04/02/2025 21:10

This is fascinating! My horse is evidently lagging behind somewhat.
I definitely need to go rug shopping 🤣

Kenji · 04/02/2025 22:26

I've got 50g, 100g, 150g, 200g and 350g. Mostly full neck, some with detachable necks. All turn out rugs, don't bother with stable rugs. Also have a fleece, riding sheet, fly rug and a fancy moisture wicking waffle rug that I can't remember the name of. They're shared between 2 horses, one that runs v hot, and the other that tends to drop weight easily in the winter if not warmly rugged.

Astrak · 23/03/2025 07:50

About thirty! In fairness, I have had a number of horses over the last three decades. Current horse is a twenty-nine year old retired 15.3hh Arabian gelding. He's on full livery with his breeder and in at night and out during the day with his little herd of relatives. If the weather is very wet, he may stay in, as he likes to hoon around and do sliding stops and hand brake turns. He's in two turn-out rugs, one lightweight, one medium. He stays in those, 24/7 at the moment. I take them off and groom/closely inspect every inch of him twice a week. The staff know him well and are all experienced Arabists.

The yard owner bred him, and all his relatives. She is a miserable person by nature, but I try to keep her sweet by paying my livery money by standing order, giving her the money for the farrier/dentist/veterinary team for innoculations before they arrive, providing carrots for my horse and hers, and biscuits for the grooms. This generally works well.

Honeyroar · 23/03/2025 07:59

Mine is retired now. He has a sweet itch hoodie type fly rug, a rain sheet, a fleece and a 100g combo. None of these fit in my (huge) rug store for all the other rugs that were his or my deceased horse’s rugs from over the past 20 years! I really need a clear out!

EverestMilton · 23/03/2025 09:05

Fat Cob lives out 99% of the time and is clipped in winter has,

  • No fill turn out sheet with neck (most used)
  • No fill turn out no neck
-100g turn out with neck (used if very cold/wet)
  • light weight stable rug (barely used)
  • snuggly hood (most used)
  • snuggly body suit (only used if hunting next day)
  • mesh light weight travel rug
  • fly rug (most used summer)
Trivium4all · 23/03/2025 18:10

Until recently, mine had a rain sheet and a somewhat heavier turnout each, and a number of fleeces. They take nearly the same size, so can wear each others' rugs, too. Then we had the massive floods in September, and the yard people had to change rugs constantly, and my heavier rugs were locked in a tack locker and I was out of the country...after some ridiculous pictures of my mare wearing absolutely massive rugs belonging to a much larger horse, I bought another 50g and 100g for my rug stash. One of them was worn once, by the pony, this winter. The rest of the time, they were as nude as usual...

Smurphy99 · 25/04/2025 05:02

Turnout:
1x 350g detachable neck
1x 220g full neck
2x 100g no neck
1x no fill no neck

Stable:
6 x no neck stable fleeces (and matching head collars!)
1x full stable fleece with hood neck cover etc
1x 100g full neck stable cooler

Anything else:
1x ride on hi-viz sheet
1x hi viz 100g rug for in hand walking off site
1x ride on full cover fly rug
2x ride on half-fleeces
1x no/detachable neck fly rug
1x full neck fly rug
1x travel fleece competition blanket

There’s probably more ! I can’t think. They all get washed at least fortnightly, as do all her head collars and lead ropes. Overreach boots taken off each day and washed as well - replaced whenever needed. Usually at this time of year it’s either out in a fly rug if very hot, out in a light no neck stable fleece if there’s dry weather and it’s dropped a bit at night, out in a waterproof no-fill if it’s going to rain. (She’s on full livery and comes in for hard feed, hay, grooming, exercise, appointments and any medication between 9am-1pm and is out all the rest of the time). (Thoroughbred who thrives on routine!)

picture of the spoilt baby below. Oh yes.. and it’s A L L PINK! (Pic of pink!)

RedPony1 · 28/04/2025 11:19

I don't even know. i have maybe 100+ ? i use about 10% of them 😂

Deliaskis · 28/04/2025 16:52

Ugh, too many really, but more or less these:

200g stable
50g stable
Stable sheet
Stable fleece
Travel fleece x2 (because we had one then my Mum got a fancy one with name on)
Fly (he is very bothered by flies and gets sweet itch)
Waterproof fly
Heavy turnout with detatchable neck
Lighter turnout with detatchable neck x2 because he tore one badly and I got it fixed but it's now a sort of reserve and both get used and then alternated for drying when it's very wet
No fill rain sheet

Current pony is a finer build with a much thinner coat than our last pony who was a native, but oddly he doesn't seem to feel the cold, and is in fact more bothered by being too hot. I have realised that I am tending to put him in the 50g stable even when it's been going down to 4 or 5 overnight this last month, and he doesn't seem bothered. I could probably get rid of the heavy turnout, didn't use it all this winter, and obvs don't need 2 travel fleeces.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/04/2025 17:25

I don’t have a horse, but I love how many accessories they need. 🤣🤣
