Stable door height

New user name is very tongue in cheek!

We are currently considering converting an old barn into stables. Horse is just over 4 and 16hh but the maximum height we can have for the door is just over 7ft (allowing for the frame.) This is the door it would be looking out through.

Anybody advise on stable door sizes.

Have added a drawing from a stable door supplier showing dimensions of a standard door , hope that helps
good idea to purchase one ready made and have it fitted

Unfortunately the barn doesn't allow for a door that high.

Why is that the maximum, because I would want more headroom for most ponies never mind a 16hh horse. Is it just the opening that will be that low or is the ceiling also 7 foot?

Having seen a 15.2hh horse cut his head on a standard stable door when being a plonker, I wouldn’t want anything smaller for a bigger horse.

My horse has a fairly low stable door - I'm not sure exactly how tall it is but I'm 5'10 and have to be careful walking under it if I have a hat on. He's 16hh and doesn't have a lot of headroom when looking out but it doesn't seem to bother him too much. The roof inside is much higher! It's not ideal but it is what it is - his actual stable is huge so it's the tradeoff for that

The interior ceiling height is 10ft and the stables will be 12ft x 14ft.

I do worry that a young horse might be a bit energetic.

If the interior height is greater, is the problem that there’s a structural beam over the doorway? Otherwise I would consider cutting out whatever is in the way, and reframing the doorway.
