Buying a pony

Is anyone else looking to buy at the moment?
We are finding it an absolute nightmare! Just wanting to moan really!
We are being messed around left right and centre by sellers and that's after spending every day checking horsequest etc for new adverts as all that's coming up seems to be competition ponies or just back 4 year olds at dealers yards.
I'm not sure how anyone ever actually buys a horse at the moment!

Where are all the genuine all rounders who have been outgrown? Seems they have vanished 😂.

@XelaM that's strange isn't it?
Maybe there are a lot more ponies for sale down south.

Maybe 🤷‍♀️ we also have friends who are unable to sell their pony and it's an absolutely cracker of a BS pony with a brilliant record at 1.10m, but theirs is more expensive than ours 🥶

@XelaM it's a shame you aren't closer. I'm looking at adverts every day, finally found one that we wanted to view, it sounded perfect, rang up and she said she was too stressed with one thing and another to book a viewing in then messaged the next day to say the pony had been sold unseen.
Every other advert on Facebook turns out to be a scammer. We just want a safe pony with a known history. We have a lovely set up at home and the horses are so well cared for.
I really thought heading into winter there would be plenty to choose from!

@XelaM I've just been looking, is your pony by any chance the one with the photo of the girl riding bareback at the beach?

No that's not us. We have a bareback photo but not at the beach - in Stoneleigh by the stables 😂 I can PM you the advert.

I'm in the opposite position, had my pony on sales livery at a lovely yard with a great reputation. Been there for five weeks and not a single viewing. The sales market is just dead in the water. She's very reasonably priced as well, about half what she would have been a year ago. I think I'm going to have to get her back and keep her over the winter, try again in spring. It's really hard though as making the decision to sell is so hard in the first place !

Are you paying a high weekly livery in addition to a sales percentage? You might find they're not in a hurry to get viewings!

@XelaM that would be good if you could? Thanks

Have PM'd you 😊

@XelaM thank you. She looks lovely. If we happen to be down your way anytime soon will give you a shout, or if you are further north competing sometime then give me a yell.

If she transforms when the bridle goes on I would want to look into all possible issues. First would be to get an EDT out preferably one recommended. I don’t believe some vets are still doing dental work without any additional training. Then try some different bits, preferably with the help of a trusted instructor. Finally I would be looking into facial nerve pain.
What does the pony’s physio have to say about her reaction?

Blankscreen · 14/11/2024 14:52

Sorry I wasn't clear the moodiness stops as soon as the bridle goes on. She becomes the lovliest
pony

3smallpups · 15/11/2024 08:23

@BrakesOn
Maybe, they have a good reputation and I naively thought that getting a good sale would be important to them.
Will be collecting her next week, paying them a fortune for basically nothing and have another pony to ride all winter 😢

@Blankscreen that’s very different from what you said earlier - your previous posts about her flagged several potential issues. Has she suddenly improved? Please don’t go down the route of dismissing signs of unhappiness as ‘oh she’s just a chestnut mare’ … every time my daughter’s mare has been difficult or problematic there has been a physical cause - mostly fairly minor as she isn’t very stoic and reacts much more strongly to something being slightly off than most horses would .. but I shudder to think of the state she’d be in if we said ‘oh she’s just a moody mare’

CobbyMouthed · 15/11/2024 12:13

I completely agree with @Pleasedontdothat and have to admit there have been times I have put up with quirks in the past without fully exploring possible reasons.
I am amazed how many very experienced horsey people don’t have a qualified dentist for their equines though.
