Horsey books

Dd (nearly 12) has read and adores all the Stacy Gregg and Lauren St John books as well as Finding Wonder. She has re-read them all several time and is desperate for some new and interesting horsey stories. Any recommendations?

my daughter loved the Clare balding ones - there’s 3

QuestionableMouse · 22/10/2024 19:59

Oh and the Jinny and Saddle Club serieses! ☺️

powershowerforanhour · 23/10/2024 23:34

The Jinny books are good, not your average pony stories.

DraftUp · 24/10/2024 18:35

I second Jinny of Finmory. I read them as a kid. Even had the Arab and now have the highland 😁. I bought used copies but I think they are being republished. Exceptional writing and very before it’s time in my view

DraftUp · 24/10/2024 18:57

…should have clarified. Bought used Jinny books for dd11 and she loves them

Conkered · 24/10/2024 20:24

My friend Flika series. Loved them.

She needs to read “The Silver Brumby” books. Probably, can only get them second hand, but they are truly wonderful.

OldSpeclkledHen · 03/11/2024 05:21

Silver Brumby for sure!

I think K M Peyton writes brilliant pony books. Try The Team, and Fly By Night.

CooksDryMeasure · 14/11/2024 08:16

@TheSandgroper have you got the right author for The Cossacks? I love Rosemary Sutcliff and have never come across that title, can’t find it on Google? Would love to find a Sutcliff I haven’t read!

CobbyMouthed · 14/11/2024 13:52

Ponies Plot is a genius if a book. It’s a riding school closing down and where all the ponies end up but told through the eyes of the ponies.
Lots of the above are also great but KM Peyton is one of my favourite authors. My high school librarian put me onto her so I started with her books aimed at teenagers. Then as I was horse mad I read all the horsey ones. Then later with younger horse mad dc I bought Poor Badger which has a Christmas theme so definitely recommend that for younger ones at this time of year. As your daughter is 12 start her with Fly by night, followed by The Team. If she likes those then the Pennington series is great, though not horsey.

Any book recommendations featuring show jumping? For a 14-year-old. Thank you ☺️

What about the classics?

Black Beauty
My Friend Flicka
The Black Stallion (which I think had a few sequels)

I read these (and the Silver Brumby books) until they fell apart when I was her age - happy memories!
