Just that, really. She’s in pieces. She’s decided she doesn’t want another one—it’s been too hard to get really attached to this one and then lose it with no warning at all. She’s said she doesn’t want to ride again (not even lessons) as the horse will still be kept at the same livery as it is now. She says it will be too hard to see someone else have him. She also doesn’t like the new owner—apparently they jump their current horse 4-5 times a week. Not sure what the point of this is, but I know people on here would empathise. DH has suggested a riding holiday, but I’m not sure we can afford it. Poor DD keeps bursting into tears.

Realistically that is the risk with loaning. Could you / do you want to but her her own pony?

Reassure her it gets better
I lost my own horse and couldn't face riding every again and gave up horses totally

8 years later I burst into tears seeing someone riding as I realised how much I missed it and went to see a part loan
When I got there, I realised it was the horse that was stabled next to mine 10 years ago and it was perfect
I loaned her for a decade

@Riverd yea, that’s the reality of it—you have no real control. She’ll be away to university in less than a year so she would have had to finish it by then (and no point us buying our own). It’s just been a shock as the owner said she would be keeping him forever.

@outforawalkbiatch thanks, I hope she gets back to it in one way or another.

I've been through this, and it's absolutely horrible- there's very little you can do about it, unfortunately. It sounds like it's not the right time for her to get her own. I would wait and see what she says in a few weeks, also in a little while it may be time to gently point out a lot of unis have riding clubs and she may want to get involved with that.

Pretty cruel of the owner to do this to your DD with no warning- obviously they can, it's their horse, but they must have known they were looking to sell...

Oh that's rubbish your poor DD.
If she doesn't want to ride for now I'd leave it but if she's off to uni maybe point her in the direction of their riding club it might be nice to do it somewhere completely new
