Riding lesson cost

Hello

Can I ask how much you are paying for children's riding lessons?

DD (just turned 8) has been riding for a year. A 1-1 flat lesson using a school horse was £35. It has just gone up to £44. We got a basic email saying due to rising costs.

I know all costs have risen but it's more than I was expecting. Is it ballpark ok though? Is that a typical cost?

DD loves it but we don't know other families to ask around.

Very average. I have been to places where it’s twice that in London and three times that at luxury hotels

gingeristhenewblack43 · 27/09/2024 22:01

How long is the private lesson?

I'm in NE England and a 30 min private has just gone up to £38 at my DD's riding school.

TapeGlassFireplace · 27/09/2024 22:05

30 mins. Central Scotland. Definitely not London! It's a good riding school but nothing fancy- nice easy Highlands as school horses.

It’s expensive to keep horses and run a business. Decide if you think it’s worth it. Hopefully you will.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 27/09/2024 22:57

That's a huge amount of money - it's £35 an hour for a 1-1 adult lesson here Blush

HotCrossBunplease · 27/09/2024 23:02

I’m pretty sure I was paying £10 an hour when I used to have weekly riding lessons in Central Scotland…but I last went regularly in 1992.

So £44 an hour 30 years later doesn’t seem that unreasonable!

Ah no hold on edited as I just saw it is £44 for half an hour. Is 30 minutes even worth it? The best bits were the hacks, you can’t have much of a hack in half an hour.

KingOfPeace · 27/09/2024 23:06

£45 for 45 mins here.

Does she still need 1:1? After a while she will need time in the saddle to work on balance and rhythm so group lessons would be cheaper and longer and she can also learn by watching others.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 27/09/2024 23:10

30 mins private is £30 here and it's at the cheap end of the scale. My kids do a joint lesson for £20 for half an hour and 'work' for a. Free ride Saturday and Sunday.

TapeGlassFireplace · 28/09/2024 22:36

Group lessons at for Pony Club - which is a bit "mean girls" and DD keen to avoid - the same girls are in Brownies and she finds them tiring.

As she gets older, she can help out and get cheaper lessons, but you have to have Horse Care 1 & 2 so you're generally age 12 before that kicks in. Plus I have to get her to the yard. So a 1-1 is definitely best for us right now.

It's just £££. And more than I spend on DS's activities combined!

£35 for 30 minutes 1:1 here.

Group lessons are cheaper, and aren't linked to Pony Club (there is Pony Club but that's separate).

bumblebeepen · 28/09/2024 22:49

£48 for half hour for a child here. 10% discount if pre booking 5 in advance.

horseymum · 28/09/2024 22:51

I think the minimum wage is just about to go up ( may be wrong) so this would have a huge impact on riding schools.

GrumpyDullard · 28/09/2024 22:52

£40 for half an hour 1-2-1 NW England.

hazandduck · 28/09/2024 22:59

My DDs do ‘Tiny Tots’ 30 mins for £25, that’s ages 4-6 though. They’ve had private lessons before which were £38 for 30 mins.

One of my DDs is turning 7 this year so will have to move her to the group class which is £38 but she’ll be riding for an hour then. They do a saddle club at this yard which is cheaper/more hands on, and seems so friendly and not bitchy at all unlike the yards of my youth, however they must be able to walk, trot, and canter comfortably to join and my two aren’t there yet!

It is shockingly expensive compared to other clubs isn’t it? Like you say, all the others combined are about the cost of riding! Why oh why did they have to get the horse-mad gene 😂😂

TapeGlassFireplace · 28/09/2024 23:42

You're so right @hazandduck DD sat on a fat little Highland at age 6 and was hooked! I should have put a stop to it before it started!

Sounds fair enough to me. It’s a costly affair as I’m sure you know.

Hi @gingeristhenewblack43 we are from the NE and looking for riding lessons for my young daughter, could you DM me the riding school details if you recommend them?! Thanks xx

APurpleSquirrel · 29/09/2024 00:26

£22 for a 45min group lesson (max 4 children) in South West.

Anisty · 29/09/2024 00:33

£25 here for 45 mins lesson with 2 riders. My DD is 17 and has been riding 10 years so the lessons are quite intense.

We are Scotland though. Everything is cheaper here.

Balloonhearts · 29/09/2024 01:05

1 to 1 here is £55 to £70 for half an hour. Maybe I should move to where you live!

Woah, where is that? Is that at beginner/novice level? We live in Hampshire.

TapeGlassFireplace · 29/09/2024 11:36

Yes, I knew what I was getting into- it's just SUCH a big jump in cost suddenly.

Some of these prices are genuinely shocking to me - either my instructor is very cheap or you're all being ripped off. 😂

theferry · 30/09/2024 20:27

£35 for 30 min private lesson, but that’s a week day time. They don’t offer privates on a weekend/evening.
I’m in N Scotland.

RedPony1 · 01/10/2024 09:08

I teach freelance sometimes - i need to up my prices!!

30mins just doesn't seem worth it, by time you've warmed up nicely, you surely don't get much time before you go to cool down (especially if you're doing some jumping) i always spend cool down summarising the lesson walking with the rider and horse but still, doesn't seem long especially for the cost!
