Selling my daughter's lovely 14.2 pony - how much would you expect to pay?

We're selling one of my daughter's ponies as she's too tall for her and wants to start competing on horses.

She's a 14.2 mare (15 years old) no medical issues at all - would pass vetting.

Very safe great all-rounder. We bought her as a Pony Club pony but my daughter has been doing affiliated SJ on her and they've done really well - qualified for Nationals in British Novice and Disco, regularly placed at shows including POYS. She's done everything on her - XC, SJ, hacking everywhere etc.

She's very safe to hack alone and in company, bomb-proof in traffic, with dogs etc. Would make a great mother-daughter share.

How much would you price her at? I'm surprised we had few enquiries for her so far, as she's a genuinely brilliant pony who is very loved by anyone who has ridden her and I'm starting to think maybe we've priced her too high.

That sounds like a good plan @XelaM .

I’m looking for a full loan to move yards to the SW if that tickles your fancy OP!

Createausernametoday · 14/11/2024 11:31

All things considered 5-7k max, especially if you’re looking to loan out. For 12k+ horse people want younger ponies that are trained for competition, not bomb proof all rounders.

A full loan would work for us in the meantime but it would have to be to a good home and it depends on what you are looking for as we'll be taking a risk that she will lose value depending on what is being done with her whilst on loan. We currently have an offer for a full loan but to a very inexperienced home (albeit to a yard where we know the main instructor) so I'm not keen

Hmm yes. I am not sure we would suit you then as we would look at some competing but mostly local unaffiliated or BRC stuff. Would also hesitate as my DD is about 5ft 6 herself! PM me if you want to discuss though.

giraffeski · 14/02/2025 10:06

@XelaM did you ever sell your pony? She sounds exactly what I'm looking for for my DD...

Sorry I just saw this. Our pony is currently on loan to a child who really loves her and they are considering buying her but she hasn't been sold yet (they don't currently have the funds to buy). I am very keen to sell as we're most likely moving abroad within six months, so I would definitely be looking to sell.

I’d say you are pricing too high. We just bought a very similar sounding pony for DD, although the one we bought is a gelding and a couple of years younger. Everything else sounds pretty identical to your post. We paid £6k, although there was no tack etc included, not sure if you are offering something more complete with her to increase the sale likelihood.

A friend of ours bought a 14.2 Connemara last spring for his v nervous child. He does everything; hunting, SJ, xc, easy to handle, load etc. takes up the leg well and our slim 5'8 DC can ride him. He jumps to about 90cm as not very fit at the moment. Our DC done NSEA SJ on him and been placed several times. He's ace.
He was advertised for £14k but failed the vetting twice so my friend got him for £7k without tack.
The market has been pretty much dead over the winter. I would wait til April or drop your price.

Cheap advertising on here....

Flixon · 24/02/2025 14:00

Could you send me details? she sounds like exactly what I am looking for ....Thank you

Astronautstar · 24/02/2025 14:08

I think it's very much the upper end price wise at the wrong time of year - people could be suspicious.

giraffeski · 24/02/2025 14:13

@XelaM I would be interested depending on location, we are in the North West, would you PM me details?

XelaM · 25/02/2025 09:49

@Flixon and@giraffeski I just tried to PM you both but it says "private messaging is currently disabled". Not sure what's up with that. We're in North London. Is that too far for you?

giraffeski · 25/02/2025 09:54

Yes I don't know whats going on with PM at the moment!
I'm looking for a 14.2 jumping pony for DD to do NSEA and BSJA on, yours sounds lovely but I think N London too far for us, sorry, we are in Cheshire.

Floralnomad · 25/02/2025 11:01

Pms have been disabled as people were getting sent links to CSA randomly , seems to have happened after the recent overnight attacks on the site with the pictures . Where are you moving to @XelaM if you don’t mind me being nosey ?

XelaM · 04/06/2025 20:58

Well, we sold our pony to the people who had her on loan as the girl was madly in love with her. We gave them a massive(!) discount and ended up having loads of enquiries for the pony, so could have got much more for her. The people who had her in loan kept playing on my heartstrings as the girl adored our pony so much and I know the pony has a home for life with them, as they don't sell their horses and take good care of them. I guess I wanted to do right by the pony who I thought deserves to be with people who truly love her, but I definitely feel like a fool who has been played a bit. Never do business with friends 😬 But at least I know the pony is in good hands and is not going to be sold on. How many £££ is that worth? 😃

I actually think that’s worth everything. I’d give either/both my horses away (even the one I paid a lot for) to a home they would be well loved and wanted. For me, that’s way more important than money. I figure the money I paid for them bought my (and DS/DD’s) experiences and relationships with them. If I got nothing back, it was still money well spent!
