Jockey wheel on trailer gone wobbly and won't lift trailer?

Hello,
i would be so thrilled if anyone knows if this is something I can fix myself or if I need someone to fix it. I couldn't unhitch the trailer without resorting to a car jack i found in our boot as the front wheel just turns round and round limply without lifting the trailer and it's also gone all wobbly.
thanks so much if anyone more experienced knows what I've done! I also never quite know when to use the crank on the side to clamp the jockey wheel tight,

Sounds like you’ve wound it too far and it’s come off the thread .. I did that once and managed to fix it myself so it can’t have been too hard but can’t remember exactly what I did 😳

The crank at the side is used to raise and lower the jockey wheel.

If the trailer is on the car, slacken it off, drop the wheel to about 2 inches off the floor and re-tighten it. Then wind the wheel down using the handle - it might just spin round without dropping - just gently stop it with a bit of wood or something - I use my foot but you shouldn't.

If the trailer is not on the car, align the towbar and ball, wind the jockey wheel up while holding the tow bar 'open' until it drops onto the tow ball. Then keep winding the jockey wheel up as far as it will go. Then slacken the crank, pull the jockey wheel as high as it will go and tighten the crank. Then as a safety measure try and lift the towbar off the towball - you shouldn't be able to - and/or you'll slightly raise the car.

The crank is used to drop the wheel before lifting it off the car and lift it after it has been put on. If youve tried to get it off car without dropping it or if you didn't tighten it after you've dropped it it's likely as a pp aid that you've wound it too far. @ChangeEmailAddress interested in why you stop it 2 in's from the ground? I always drop it all the way 😬

Don't always tow with the same vehicle and it's best to have a bit of flexibility.

Thank you all so much . I will have a look at it again tomorrow . I tried to re-connect the thread but so far no luck

It's now working almost as normal which I'm delighted by, but if I want to wind the front of the trailer a bit higher it suddenly all collapses which it never did before .

It shouldn’t do that if you have tightened the jockey wheel crank. Be sure that is good and tight. If it still happens, get it serviced (this should be done annually, but some people skip it.) Good luck!
