Showing, double reins, rules?

Hi all, not fully up to speed on all the rules when showing so thought I'd ask for advice

12 year old daughter has a WPB. They're doing a variety of classes, he does well in first ridden where he obviously wears a snaffle (he isn't really a first ridden as he can be sharp, but he can look like one under the right circs) but also turn out classes and ridden part bred classes.

Is it the case that he should go in a pelham and double reins for the part bred classes (he's got a teeny tiny mouth so a proper double bridle isn't an option)

If he does need a pelham, what reins are best? My daughter is very petite with small hands and I'm worried they'll be too chunky.

She will obviously be having lessons in it before we go out showing in it, she's an experienced kid, is well balanced with very good hands (not blowing her trumpet, the show producer judging at her last show told me)

Just need a bit of advice on how it all goes. Also best turned out classes, we turn him out as a show hunter pony - would he look better in the pelham in this class too rather than the snaffle?

PS he does go very nicely in the snaffle, this is purely for what is "correct" for the show ring 😀

Yes I'd put him in a rugby pelham, but please make sure you get a double bridle or sliphead to use. Pet hate of mine to see them not used correctly! Ensure your DD has lots of lessons. Rein wise its what she will find comfy but traditional is laced or plaited for the snaffle and plain for the curb which should also be a bit slimmer. I'm assuming he is plaited?

Of course he SHOULDN'T be marked down for being in a snaffle. However, traditional turn out is normally a safe way to go providing pony and rider are happy.

@OrlandointheWilderness yes he's plaited, with a pulled tail.

Thank you, yes we've got a slip head - pet hate of mine too seeing them not fitted correctly!

@Littlebitpsycho I can't bear it, it actually makes my skin crawl a bit.

I would get a bit specialist out to assess the pony and your daughter and who can then advise which is best for them .

Avoid a rugby pelham at all costs, extremely ugly bit to put in the show ring and i breathed a sigh of relief when they become less popular! i haven't seen one for years luckily.

Google show pelham, far neater on a small head. Please make sure you have the lip strap on the curb too. you can get a vert dainty curb rein and your daughter will just ride off the snaffle rein anyway.
