How much is my pony worth?

I'm about to advertise a 6 year old mare for sale but have no idea of how much to ask. She's broken in but green, hacking out alone and good in all the ways you'd expect of a young horse just started, but can be a bit bolshy on the ground so needs firm handling there. A fairly lightweight, 14.1/14.2 pretty cob x tb type with no recorded breeding (skewbald - chestnut colour rather than bay). Can anyone give me any pointers?

Maybe have a look on right horse, right home, or horse and hound, or dragon driving…or dealers like sovereign / Chris Dyson, for comparisons . Any local to you Facebook pages?
you may want to consider a dealer who might sell for you? I don’t envy you dealing with buyers.

She probably falls at an odd end of the market because everyone wants something that can be ridden by insanely nervous riders, however she is a good size.
I would say around £4/5k?

Is there a 'We Buy Any Horse'?

If so, whatever they offer, add at least a third to get nearer to the real value.

liveforsummer · 14/07/2024 08:09

If she's not done much and not really suitable for a novice I'd say about 3.5k max. Prices are going down now after the crazy Covid high and a lot of people are stuck unable to even get viewings on decent horses

My immediate thought was like LastQueen, about £4-5k. What kind of home were you thinking for her, has she got the potential to event/SJ/dressage at a reasonable level (talking grassroots not pro level), as she's pretty would she show in say CHAPS classes and has she been on any outings? It might be good before you sell to see if you can get her out even just to unaffiliated dressage or local showing or something so you have that box ticked.

Or are you thinking more just an all-rounder family pony/PC type home? It does depend on what the bolshiness consists of, if it's fairly manageable and she's good to ride a dealer would doubtless ask a lot more, and asking less doesn't necessarily mean you get a better home, the risk with going in at the £4-5k mark will be that someone will think they can spend the summer working on the ground manners and going out and about and double their money, so I'd vet potential buyers very carefully to avoid that. You could think about advertising a smidge above her true value and accepting less to a really nice home?

Here's some comparisons from horse quest all at quite a lot more than the £4-5k mark, maybe these have done more than yours/haven't disclosed issues on the ground, but to illustrate the point that you want to avoid someone who thinks they can take a few pics jumping a big fence, couple of outings to xc showing and/or a good comp result and sell on for £8k+ (not saying that's what these sellers are doing BTW)

DOLLY

<p>Dolly is still green as only started her education at the beginning of the year but she&rsquo;s proved to be absolutely amazing, taking everything in her stride, always tries her heart out. She&rsquo;s good to catch, clip, bath, vet, farrier, teeth,...

Post a photo? Hard to tell from a description like that.

Thank you for the replies, I'm thinking of getting her going a bit more over the next month or so with a view to advertising her around the 4/5k mark in September (hopefully to sell before the winter). If she doesn't sell it's no biggie as I'll ride her on over the winter and take her out to do some stuff then advertise for more next spring!!

I'd rather not post a picture as it's quite outing but she's quite a nice stamp. She's also exceptionally comfortable to ride which is amazing, she's got the smoothest trot that you can just sit to as opposed to my other mare!
