Do people on your yard ride together?

Just before lockdown I got back into horses/ riding again. Had a few lessons and a 8yo horse on loan who’s owner had him on full loan and never rode. This was a very small yard and the Yard Owner only rode out with friends and did not want me to come along as my loan was unfit/ nappy due to being out of work.

Then a friend from work offered to loan me her horse on another tiny yard as she had just had twins. Her horse was a fabulous happy hacker and has no vices at all other than he hates the school and won’t hack alone. She eventually decided to sell him and offered me a really good price as she could still come to visit and knew I would look after him. At precisely that time, just as I was getting confident and a much better rider, and my horse fitter, one person on the yard had a fall and lost her nerve and the other two left. These two were replaced by children with ponies who ride them round the school while their mothers video them for social media and only hack out occasionally and for a short period of time and the horse of the person who fell was left in the field.

So at the end of last year I moved to my current yard, which is much, much bigger and I was told lots of people hack out all the time and I can get support from the YO who is also a trainer, to get my horse hacking alone. Not as much turnout here as my old yard but seemed perfect in other ways. In the first three months it was great, when the weather was decent enough there were people riding out, one in particular I got on with. But then in March, she left for a yard with more turnout and the other people I rode with stopped riding as the sales liveries they used were sold and the ones they owned are still too young to ride. The rest of the people on the yard either have shetlands as pets that they are way too big to ride, are children on lead rein, or have foals that the YO will break in when they are old enough ( none older than two years old). There is one exception of a really lovely teen who comes and rides one of the smaller ponies for its owner. I am now relying on a 15 year old to ride with and last night missed a date night with DH so I could get out and ride with her .

I hate being so reliant on anyone, let alone a teen who will no doubt much rather be with kids her own age. I have put sooo much time in with my horse doing ground work and training but it’s one step forward, three steps back. I can get him out for a short period of time alone but he is soo nappy, for example it took me an hour to get about a quarter of a mile up the road last week and that was my most successful lone outing in all the time I have had him. In contrast, he is a dream out and about when there is at least one other horse around.

I am feeling extremely despondent and frustrated today. The YO has no time to help me and I feel that the yard isn’t what I was told it was in that hardly anyone rides out at all but the people who are there are lovely and the horses are well cared for, which means a lot.

My horse is 16 and I am 55. It is summer soon and I want us to be having fun together while we are still fit and able to. I am not sure whether to look at other yards or just give up and resign myself to groundwork and long reining forever.

If I do look yet again, is it likely to be the same? Are there any yards where lots of people hack out regularly and do fun things like days out for beach and forest rides? This is what I want but how do I know that they really do this stuff rather then telling me what I want to hear? I did check the social media of my current yard and there are pics on there of farm rides but I found out that they were from years ago.

sorry for the long post but it feels good to get it out. I am in Cheshire and currently play £360 per month for half livery if this is relevant but I am wondering what other people’s experiences are generally from all types and sizes of yard nationwide and if my experience is typical?

Could you send him away for training? Yes, it will cost a fair few £££, but if they can solve this lone hacking issue, you can then hack yourself or if company is available
Or, would you feel confident to try ride and lead if there is a horse that someone would lend you?
(At yards I've been out, people will always ride out together. Yes, there are some I'd rather ride or not ride out with, but it has never been that cliquey that people refuse the company all of thr time)

ReallyBadEyeDeer · 16/05/2024 08:06

I recently put a similar sort of post - im in same position and agree it's really disheartening. There are only one or two who go out on my yard and they're lovely but very close knit and quite plainly don't want a third person interrupting their pair.

AmyFFowler · 16/05/2024 10:28

I think there are yards out there which are better for this. About 6 miles from me there is a large, cheap diy yard. It’s on a farm, has an arena but limited use as shared by so many. On the plus side the farm is given over to making haylage and straw based crops so all haylage and bedding is included in your fee. Last time I asked this was £30 per week, They also have tracks around the outside of the farm which form a decent farm ride. With the facilities this yard has, it attracts happy hackers more than serious competition riders and I know it is a generally friendly yard where people regularly ride together. We have lots of yards near us, including a more expensive one which is a competition venue for all disciplines. That one also has a farm ride but doesn’t have such a nice reputation.

I have regular people I can hack with at my yard, but hacking alone was a massive factor for my horse purchase criteria as it is very annoying to be reliant on others, and if you can't hack with others or go in the school this is incredibly limiting hence the good price you got on the horse.

I would suggest

1 - does your yard have a group chat where you can coordinate with others. Ideally youd be able to do a mix of both

2 - work on fixing the napping issue.

  • Be firm, but release when they move. Anticipate and keep plenty of leg on (one on ours needed to leave the yard at a spanking trot and keep moving, or a slow and stead on their own, whatever works) building up from a very short hack (ideally small loop), repeat, repeat, praise praise.
  • Get company then let the company stop and you and your horse go further. I started by said nappy horse just finishing the end of the 'loop' and back to the horse again
  • Get someone on the ground to reinforce your ques with a lunge whip following you up the road out the yard. Get them really moving forward so its easier to go forward then stop/ plant. Keep short til going nicely then turn for home think baby steps - when you chose.

3 - work on fixing your horses issues in the school? can you do some low level pole work / get an instructor involved assuming not avoiding school due to age. Possibly send away to someone recommended for schooling who could get them hacking out alone.

4 - The fact they struggle without company and in school suggests they have confidence issues and are not at all listening to the riders ques or could be uncomfortable somewhere check your tack, back check, massage and potentially vet out

Sorry for the essay, forgot to add - Move yards life's too short. You can always move again.

Floralnomad · 16/05/2024 12:51

Actually @LostRider made a good point which I left out of my post yesterday and that is that it needs to be your decision to turn round and go home so as soon as you get a bit of free forward movement go home , gradually extending how far you go .

MostlyGhostly · 16/05/2024 19:28

Thank you so much for your suggestions, I’m going to try them all and set myself some more small and achievable goals. Now the weather has gone crappy again I feel a bit less despondent as I don’t feel I am missing out so much and it seems less frustrating to go and do a bit of groundwork.

or I might make DH and 3 DCs move nearer to the farm near @AmyFFowler or near @Parsley1234 so we can be hacking mates. Forget schools and jobs, horses come first 😂

AmyFFowler · 16/05/2024 20:07

Sound like a fantastic swap, where do I sign up!

Parsley1234 · 16/05/2024 20:31

@AmyFFowler it was a fantastic swop lol

Cheesyfootballs01 · 26/05/2024 14:54

OP what does he actually do when he naps?

MostlyGhostly · 26/05/2024 18:15

Plants, refuses to move (but happy to move back in the direction of the yard) , occasional bunny hops

I’ve been on 4 yards and always found people to ride with, I think you’ve just been unlucky! In my experience less than half of people on a livery yard ride. Maybe aim for a bigger yard.

If your on Facebook, advertise on local horsey groups for people nearby to hack with?
Join a riding club? Usually loads of group things to do there.

I would also try and get the horse going alone, but I can understand why it’s so much better with friends!

cryinglaughing · 27/05/2024 07:27

I have the opposite problem.
I love to ride on my own but every time I am sneaking out for a hack, someone asks to join me. I am not that joyless that I say no 😁

I would say to move yards. I used to have mine at home, moved to a yard because she was far more green than I had been led to believe. First yard, huge, 60+ horses but only a handful of riders and very rarely saw anyone riding. Moved to a yard half the size and still not many riders but those that do ride regularly. There is always someone to go out with.

You just need to find the yard that is the best fit for your horse.
You pay a lot of money to enjoy him/her. If hacking is your enjoyment, find somewhere that you can do that.

HighlandCowbag · 27/05/2024 07:35

One of the main things I want to be able to do is hack out independently. Your yard owner is a trainer, ask for help! It will cost, no one works for free so be prepared to pay an hourly rate. But I'd ask her first to work with your horse, then with you because even if she can get the horse going forward independently, you need to be able to do it.

The only other thing you could maybe try if you are confident enough, is offer to ride and lead one of the ponies. Pony gets exercise, yours gets company. But practice with someone with you to start with.

What do you do to try and move him on?

PinkCardigan93 · 28/05/2024 12:12

Georgia Plimbley is in your area I believe - she really helped my cousin with napping issues. She's liberty based and trains horses for films etc

Frostandfrogs · 28/05/2024 12:20

I wonder whether livery at a riding school, where you can join in on their hacks, might be a way forward for you.
Also look at FB pages of other yards locally, and you might see them sharing pictures of them riding out/get a feel for how they operate.
I imagine it's very frustating for you!

RedPony1 · 04/06/2024 13:55

I'm on a small yard, but apparently the only person that works full time so they all ride in the day.

I'm not a massive hacking fan anyway, i only do it for education of the ponies and break all mine (& other peoples in) to hack alone, i never take a nanny horse out with them the first 8-10 times as napping is my pet hate. It's also my favourite thing to fix!! You can buy really cheap nappy horses and make half decent profit restarting them still 😆

How do you fix them?

RedPony1 · 05/06/2024 16:46

When i say fix, i mean re-training them.
8/10 times any horse that's come to me with napping issues has been stuck in a destructive cycle with their rider/handler, so it's undoing old habits and re-installing new ones. It often doesn't actually normally take too long when worked on consistently, after a vet work up of course.
