Riding lessons - whips

Disclaimer, non-horsey mum of a novice rider:

Dd has had riding lessons for 6 moths, the instructor seems to expect that riders bring their own whip, many children have shortish whips during the riding lesson. Where can I get a suitable whip and what do I need to know before buying one? Dd is 10 years and 4.8ft (if that influences things in terms of size). Links would be very helpful.

TIA.

Why need a whip? We just don't use them or need them, except where a horse is being schooled by one of our BHS level 3 coaches.

FWIW I never ride with a short crop (or whip) these days, and I've never used it as punishment. I do ride with a dressage whip when attempting sideways/fancier movements. It's never intended as a punishment, but a way to give a small subtle aid on the quarters or shoulders in places my legs won't reach. I believe this is pretty standard/conventional practice- I know people do ride/train to high levels without them, of course!

However, a dressage whip is quite an unwieldy thing, and for a beginner it's probably more appropriate to practice with a short crop or whip before progressing onwards!

The rider should of course be shown how to carry it correctly, how to swap it from hand to hand when changing the rein, and how and where the instructor wants them to use it if needed.

I wouldn't be happy with a child being regularly told to "hit" a pony, or even really make contact with the pony- although I do take the point about riding school horses being less responsive. But I wouldn't have a problem with a child learning to carry one safely.

OP- perhaps chat to your instructor after the next lesson and check they are happy for your DD to carry one, and will show her how to do so safely?
