Which equestrian “influencers” are you following?

Weftaway768 · 05/02/2024 14:17

Using the term “influencers” lightly as I don’t know what the correct term is for someone who puts out horsey content but I prefer practical tips and good equine training tips as opposed to jokey stuff or deep and meaningful interviews, but I suppose I am interested in a range?

Whose podcasts do you listen to and which Instagram or You Tube videos do you watch? Do any competitive yards broadcast content for example?

I am interesting in learning about horse care from those with a high standard of practice.

Thanks!

God don't follow any equestrian influences for horse care! I follow proper horsemen/women ie Lucinda Green, Pippa Funnell etc.
If you are interested in horse care then the BHS Stages books are a good place to start to understand basic techniques but some of the ideas can be old fashioned.although my own opinion is that many riders today could do with learning about old fashioned care, the levels of ignorance and lack of interest in learning is scary!

There is so much poor/bad practice in horse care especially on instagram/tiktok etc.
My personal bug bear are riders who have the match, matchy stuff but don't have a decent first aid kit for their horse, won't call a vet out and would rather take advice from Facebook.

Should have edited this to re-title: what equestrian on-line content are you interested in?

Thanks Twisty long time Pippa Funnell fan here. I didn’t explain it well but I’m not a novice in that I grew up with horses. Have my own now after a gap of many years. I agree with you about old-fashioned methods but also want to upgrade my skills as products, science and behavioural knowledge have moved on a lot since I attended pony club.

Are you researching for something?

Heavens no. I am returning to horse ownership after a long period working away. Nearly three decades to be more accurate!

Everything seems to have changed and I want to keep abreast of developments in horse care and riding.

Dr.David Marlin is a good one especially around thermoregulation and for all science stuff
Clare McLeod independent nutritionist on Facebook for common sense and unbiased nutritional advice
Equestrians Act Now on Facebook for anti-cruelty training in top level competition (mainly dressage)
I follow a lot of physios for core strengthening exercises

Then I follow some of the more enlightened race horse trainers as I have ex-racers. I only follow the ones who turn their horses out daily etc.

Lucinda Green is great to follow, there is no riding issue that she can't solve.
Carl Hester because he is just fantastic, much prefer him to Charlotte.

I listen to the buck off banter and they are bloody brilliant. So funny.

I also like the equiratings eventing podcast (great content even if you aren't massively into eventing).

Plus Let's Talk Horses with Meg Parkinson

I'm not a big fan of influencers, I follow a few but do snooze them if I get irritated. I do quite like following some of the well known riders.

I recently bought a young horse who is a bit nervous so started looking at groundwork which I've never been into before.
Discovered Warwick Schiller YouTube vids. He does a lot of work on understanding how horses communicate and learning how to respond in their training. It's based on Western but useful for all disciplines.
It's amazing how he builds their confidence and trust. I'm learning lots about body language and release of pressure in training.

Riding with Rhi. She's lovely and has an awful time when she lost her first horse. She now has another horse and is sharing her journey of getting to know him.

I'm a Warwick Schiller fan, just for his understanding of the horse itself and how it communicates, behaves and interacts with you as a human.

If it's riding tips you're after, any of the above mentioned tutors would work just fine. Find one who you feel comfortable with and explore.

Olivia Towers rider who has ridden at a high level but is now taking things more slowly with her horses, less pressured, quite ite real and honest., horses inside out,- science based ground work. Russell Guire, quite scientific around tack fit etc. equitation science - how horses learn, good training tips.

I haven't read all of the thread so apologies if these have already been mentioned but I would recommend Life on the Left Rein and Elphick Event Ponies on YouTube. Their friend EMD Eventing is also quite nice. Also recommend the content on H&C TV. All good sources for fun horsey content! Have fun!
