Third party insurance

DD is getting a pony on part share and needs third party insurance. Can anyone recommend some companies? I know that the BHS includes insurance, but there are companies that offer additional benefits (such as emergency vet fees) for a similar amount of money.

You can get 3rd party insurance through BHS, World Horse Welfare or if she’s a member of the Pony Club. WHW and Harry Hall both do relatively cheap ‘catastrophe’ cover, however it only covers visible external injuries up to about £1500. And if the pony is a part share, insurance for vet fees etc is down to the owner not you. You should only be liable for vet fees if you had the pony on full loan.

Many thanks for your advice. That’s what I was looking for—insurance that would cover emergency vet bills in the event of the horse being injured in an accident when out hacking. The owner has said they will cover vet fees, We haven’t signed a contract yet so this is something I’ll ask about.

WHW is very expensive
BHS is reasonable and has personal accident and 3rd party cover for £10m, but nothing else.
Petplan is reasonable and has emergency vet bills, dental cover, money in the event of a fracture for DD. But the 3rd party cover is only £2m.
I know £2m is a lot but that pony is a walking disaster (always seems to find trouble 😀). I’m just imagining some kind of event when he causes a disaster and it amounts to more than £2m! Partly said in jest…

I don’t know whether to prioritise the amount of 3rd party cover, or risk a lower amount with more benefits.

Should have said Harry Hall has £10m for 3rd party and covers personal accident, but nothing else.

Like the PP, I don’t think you should be worrying about vet bills if this is just a share? That’s the owners responsibility.

You need 3rd party for your daughter to be covered whilst riding.

I have HH catastrophe cover and they paid out- but it’s only for external injury- eg in my case a field kick that fractured a splint bone. Because of the external cut the X-rays etc were covered, but if it hadn’t broken the skin I wouldn’t have been covered. But in any event, I don’t think external injuries would/should be your responsibility.

id just focus on public liability and personal injury for your daughter (obviously checking with the owner that they have covered the horse, and aren’t expecting you to).

You shouldn’t need cover for vet fees no matter where or how the pony might be injured - that would be the owner’s responsibility. You do need third party insurance and you can get rider’s insurance to cover your daughter if she got hurt while with the pony.

Thank you! I think we’ll go with Harry Hall.

I'm not sure you can even have the pony insured twice? The owners insurance will cover the vets bills regardless of who was rising at the time and many hacking injuries wouldn't be external. Harry hall is good so I've heard plus you get discount on their products but no need for the vet fee section
