Dd who is age 18 was riding out a race horse this morning and fell off. She describes it more like the horse went a bit crazy and she jumped off.
She is an experienced rider.

She hit her head but wasn't knocked out. She is refusing to get checked out by GP or hospital.

It happened this morning and I didn't know until this evening so the question is does she need to go get checked out? She has a bit of a headache and is tired. She is away to bed.

I feel like the yard owner should have sent her home but he just moved her onto mucking out duties. She isn't employed there she just picks up the odd casual day.

If she wasn't knocked out she may well be OK. See how she feels later. I have fallen off and been knocked out a lot, but fortunately escaped concussion. Not a medical professional!

Can you see what NHS online says she should do?

twistyizzy · 29/09/2023 21:06

NHS online but she will also need a new hat before getting back on a horse. If she isn't employed then does she have her own personal accident + liability insurance?

Floralnomad · 29/09/2023 21:07

Unless she is actually unwell I doubt going to hospital will achieve much . Make sure she replaces her hat .

Ok good point about the hat. Yes she has her own insurance. Will check on her during the night just to be sure.

She's 18 and from what you say has capacity. Sadly for parents this means she can make decisions that are unwise, even if we have to pick up the pieces of those decisions sometimes.

Have a look at the NHS Head Injury website for things to watch out for/red flags - it gives you a third party that she might consider taking on board.

DD has had it twice and I would look up what to check abd the red flags (DD was confused didn’t know where she was and threw up a lot)
