I’d love to share my news.
Today, at the age of 53, I’ve bought my first horse.
He’s a lovely grey 14.2 Connemara who has the kindest eyes, makes me feel safe and happy and is a brilliant all rounder.
I’m sitting in disbelief and a feeling of overwhelming happiness.

I’ve ridden all my life on and off but somehow having my own horse was never a reality.
I returned to riding more seriously in the past 4 years.
I’ve tried different riding schools, horses and instructors, some with more success than others.
I’ve been lurking on the Tack Room for ages and I can really relate to most of the issues facing adults returning to riding.

I’ve been so incredibly lucky in finding the most fantastic stables and people who have changed my life in a way I never thought possible.
I don’t have many people in my life who ‘get it’ so I thought I’d take the plunge and share my fantastic news with the lovely folk here.
Today marks the start of a whole new chapter with my beautiful Connemara.

Aw - he's gorgeous!

Congratulations! I recently got my first horse at the age of 51. Still can’t believe my childhood dream came true

FunkyBuddha85 · 29/06/2023 12:10

Amazing! Well done you! Do you have a pic you could share?
I've been thinking about buying my own for years... I rode pretty much all my life and went to Queen Ethelburga's in York (horsey girls my age-38- will know all about the adverts in the magazines!)
Moving back to London it's just felt so unobtainable but I do miss it.
Starting to think life is too short and I should just do what makes me happy and get a bloody horse!

Congratulations!

Huge congrats op! I hope you will be very happy together!

I bought my first horse five years ago in my early to mid fifties - couldn’t afford it before then - he’s a total joy and a right stubborn bugger too - but we are slowly getting there …😂🙈😂

… have turned in to the archetypal “middle aged woman with flag” much derided on here but I don’t care …

…I adore the very bones of him; his character, his size, his mane, his eyes, even the way he smells! It is like being in love all over again 😄😄

Your post makes me really happy. I have loved horses all my life but never have had my own (I have loaned briefly in my teens.)I’m in my 30’s now and have just started riding again. I am anticipating I will be around your age before I can think of buying my own, but your post gives me hope that one day it will happen! I hope you have many happy years together.

Awww congratulations. There is a Connie at our yard and he's adorable.

orangeflags · 30/06/2023 16:28

Lovely breed. How old is he?

Mollyplop999 · 01/07/2023 12:23

What a lovely thread! Many congratulations. I am 58 and still can't believe I have a pony. Even in winter just seeing their expectant faces makes the hard work worthwhile.

JaffavsCookie · 01/07/2023 21:00

Congrats OP, i do hope you are enjoying your new friend

LostRider · 03/07/2023 11:33

If I look to buy in the future Id love a Connemara but always worried Id look too big on them good to know some returning adults taking a fancy to them too! Good to have an update how you get on with your new steed!

LikeAnOldFriend · 03/07/2023 11:34

What a lovely post! Congratulations and all the best! Your horse sounds so lovely.

CoinsinaJar · 03/07/2023 11:57

Congratulations on your new friend. Have fun. As an older rider myself (69), with two sets of hooves to look after, I can tell you that you're never too old. I got my younger one just 18 months ago. There's a very good FB group for riders of more "mature" years, if that's your thing.....
