Horse suddenly a bit lame

margarine17 · 04/05/2023 12:52

I am selling my horse as he is too good for me. A lovely lady drove over an hour to come and meet him and I went to the bottom of the paddock and when walking behind him to meet her I saw he was limping! Never happened before . I thought I was seeing things but the lady said as she patted him " he's so lovely but obviously lame".
I felt terrible. He was fine in the morning and has been totally sound the year I have had him. He was just stood in his paddock so no idea how he injured himself.
Had the farrier out today who found a tiny abscess in one back hoof. That was it. Said he will be right in a week.
But he was limping at the front.
My horsey neighbour watched him yesterday and thinks he is 3/5 on the lameness scale yesterday.
Farrier thinks he will be fine in a week.
Lady who wants to buy him is losing interest fast.
I'm a newby and totally confused.
Any help would be great.

Are pics allowed? Though it won't help will it.

No-one can diagnose from a photo and in any case you should only follow diagnosis from a vet not random people on a chat forum.

Would still love to see a photo of the pony though 😊

margarine17 · 08/05/2023 09:19

Hopefully a photo of the pali and the pony coming up

The pony is very naughty. The palomino quarter horse is a dream!

He's gorgeous, but that's a lot of grass for him. I'd be concerned of laminitis

margarine17 · 09/05/2023 02:58

Oh that was a year ago. Our paddock is pretty much mud now. ( southern hemisphere). He was fine until last week . I have to hand feed now as no real grass until spring ( September).

You know if anyone wants to take her off my hands..... Only kidding she's a menace but she's part of the family. Horse is too, but apparently a performance horse which I didn't know. Am total new owner. Vet coming in 3 days. Ta all for the help and comments.

Still a wee a bit lame but better. Someone has suggested a kick from the pony!
Possibly sold find out tomorrow. If so it's an amazing story and will update you lovely horsie people - someone has been looking for him.

So your horse has been lame for over 3 weeks and you still haven't called the vet? Sorry that is just neglectful especially as you say you are selling him so potentially passing on an issue to the next owner.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 30/05/2023 16:32

Any update OP?

Yep. ( for pp who was cross at me I have had the farrier out twice) and was going to get the vet out next week. BUT
He is sold , and it's like something out of a movie!
I pulled his ad down as much as I could, after the lameness, just left "palomino" and my details - it was paid for and had no option to withdraw the ad, unless marked as sold and he wasn't.

Then last week I got a msg from a lady. She has been trying to track down a Palomino named (X) for years; after working with him when he lived at a huge horse property about 2 hours from me. She knew it was a long shot but, when she sent me the name and the photo it was unmistakeably him!

So after years looking for him, she snapped him up and is collecting him tomorrow. She missed the ad when I bought him as it was only up for a day them marked as sold. I fell immediately in love and grabbed him that afternoon, just over a year ago.

I'm super honest and mentioned the lameness - she doesn't care ( she's a horse vet nurse who works with some hugely expensive horses on a very wealthy horse property every day so knows what she is doing) - she just loves him and will keep him forever. Has a big property ( much bigger than my 1 acre backyard ) and other horses to play with.
She is beside herself happy! And I'm thrilled he is going to someone who already loves him!

She is sending me msgs about his new "wardrobe" and has already paid in full without even seeing him for about 8 years. I've got seriously sellers remorse but am super happy for my boy.

Lovely lady and her whole family turned up today. So happy. Sent me a photo of him once they got home. He has really landed on his feet my sweetpea.

So you still hadn't called the vet out after your horse being lame for 4 weeks?!
A farrier isn't a vet!
I have to stop reading this thread now because to have an obviously lame horse for 4 weeks and not call the vet is neglectful and you have compromised your horse's welfare.
But thats fine because you've managed to off load the problems onto someone else 🙄
Please don't get another horse if you aren't prepared to look after them properly. Even my 11 yr old DD knows you call the vet within a few days of any lameness being picked up.

margarine17 · 03/06/2023 08:53

Geez, after a few weeks he was a tiny bit lame in one hoof, an abscess. Did you read the bit that I told her he was suddenly a bit lame and as an equine vet nurse she was happy to have him??
Not sure what you are angry about.
I'm happy, buyer is happy ( and thanked me for my honesty )
Horse is happy
New family he is living with are happy.
Chill out.

twistyizzy · 03/06/2023 17:05

You originally he was notieably lame and your friend said 3/5th lame which is significantly lame. Now he was only slightly lame?
You originally said it was an abscess in the hind hoof but he was lame in the front?
You said on 09/05 that vet was coming in 3 days and then post after that the horse was miraculously being sold! However the vet has blatantly never arrived, horse is still lame which it shouldn't be if it was an abscess. It has been 4 weeks since your original post asking for advice.

Most people advised you got a vet but you chose to ignore that, leaving a horse lame for 4 weeks is neglect.

Being new to horse ownership is no excuse when multiple people have advised you to call a vet and you have ignored them.
So instead of me chilling out maybe you should look at how you have neglected this horse.

margarine17 · 04/06/2023 03:20

OK. I took advice from my farrier, who actually tended to the horse ( not a person on the internet who has never seen him), and his advice was that if he was still a bit lame after a few weeks of rest to get a vet out . SO I was waiting. No heat, Horse happy as larry .
And then now he is with someone who adores him and has access to the best horse specialists in our country ( place she works at is owned by an Australian billionaire) they have equine vets, dentists, massuers etc all on staff. He is going to be fine. Stop stressing! .
Yes the abscess was found in the back hoof, but when he was running it looked like the front hoof. Sorry
He was in beautiful condition ( though paddock) when I handed him over, and a tiny bit of a limp on one hoof. Geez. Maybe go and buy a rescue horse rather than scream at people on the internet who are actually looking after their horses!
You seem a bit over involved.
There are actual horses out there that are neglected, not fed, not given salt or vitamins , not rugged in the cold , never have their feet done etc. Maybe have a crack at them rather than me.
I looked after that horse perfectly and your continual carry on that I didn't is getting annoying. Not replying to this thread again.
Go rescue a horse @twistyizzy and do something helpful. Goodness me!
