What breed of horse would have these markings?

Recently I saw a horse and rider and I was struck by how utterly gorgeous the horse was. I'm not a horse-y person and know very little about these majestic creatures.

The horse was a pale sandy colour and was covered with small, pale brown spots. It reminded me at the time of a leopard.

I've Googled several different things and can't find any images of horses like the one I saw but sadly I haven't seen it since.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Appaloosa?

tenbob · 19/03/2023 15:35

It’s not necessarily a specific breed, but a colour

Google ‘palomino’ or ‘dappled palomino’
is that the colour you saw?

Floralnomad · 19/03/2023 15:36

Could have been a Palamino Roan , they are sandy with dappled bits .

Ihatethenewlook · 19/03/2023 15:37

Spotty horses are generally Appaloosa

Ihatethenewlook · 19/03/2023 15:38

Tried to post pics of palomino Appaloosas but not sure if it worked

Picklypickles · 19/03/2023 16:07

Don't know about breed but could be a strawberry roan colour maybe.

Picklypickles · 19/03/2023 16:10

Or possibly a cremello appaloosa, my horse was a cremello but didn't have any spots, she was a cream colour with a white blaze and white socks although they could be hard to see as she was very dirty most of the time!

Newuser82 · 19/03/2023 16:10

Palomino or a dun? They can often have dapples.

DarkDarkNight · 19/03/2023 16:14

A golden dun or some type of roan?

I love a fleabitten grey, could be that if it was more grey/white than cream?

Irridescantshimmmer · 19/03/2023 16:22

The small pale spots are usually typical of a flea bitten grey however the animal you saw may be grey crossed with palamino. Palamino have a lighter coloured mane and tail.

Its just a suggestion.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/03/2023 16:39

Are you sure it wasn't just a huge leopard with someone showing off in an act of sheer bravado?

Newuser82 · 19/03/2023 20:52

Was it like this?

Sorry I posted and ran earlier - Mother's Day so spent the day with my two young children and my own mum.

I've Googled all your suggestions.

It definitely WASN'T like a (typical) appaloosa, fleabitten, golden dun, strawberry roan, palomino or an actual giant leopard. The fleabitten (or fleabitten grey) markings are much too small in this case.

The closest I can find through your suggestions is the dapple palomino which suggests my memory has inverted the colours. I remember the horse being pale with darker, but still pale brown spots. Maybe it was darker with lighter spots? Either way it was absolutely beautiful and looked (to a novice) in very good condition and well looked after.

If anyone has any further suggestions I'd be really happy to read then. Thank you so much to everyone who has commented with ideas!

It might just have been a dappled grey, like this one? Nearly all white horses (we call them greys) will have some dapples but it's rare to see them all over the body consistently, normally the horse will have patches of dapples and patches of white, you can often see the dapples more clearly on their legs, neck or bum. The more dapples you can see, usually the younger the horse, because greys get whiter over time. So they are often born black or dark brown, go a very dark iron grey as a young horse, have lovely dapples in their prime, then gradually fade to pure snowy white in old age.

The sandyness you refer to may simply have been dirt😂my grey boy is the aforementioned pure snowy white technically but most of winter he's kind of a creamy/off white colour because he gets filthy, the stains are murder to get off with just a brush and as we don't have hot running water on the yard I don't wash him too often. I figure it's doing him no harm although he does look beautiful in his summer pure white glory!

Or, dun (buckskin) horses can also have dapples, like this one? So if the coat was more beige-ish then maybe it was a dappled dun? What colour was the mane and tail, do you remember?
