How to find a horse? Horse Quest?

hi,
We haven’t got anywhere with local contacts and trying to find a safe all rounder for our experienced 15 year old in the south west.
does anyone have any ideas and do many people use Horse Quest? I don’t know where else to start . She jumps and does cross country, and above all looking for a trusted horse

Yes to horsequest but prices are sky high at the mo. I know 2 good people in the North West (and who to avoid) if you want a recommendation but I'd wait a while until prices are more reasonable.

Facebook, whickr

Facebook is good, but you need to be very careful you are buying from a good dealer, you’ll be spending 5 figures easily on that sort of horse so if you are finding one for £3k it’s likely dodgy. Do you have an instructor who can come with you

I know an amazing horse that's about to go on sale at my daughter's yard, but he's going to be expensive. He's a very good jumper and currently owned by a 15-year-old who is competing on him, but will go into seniors

XelaM · 11/12/2022 12:12

He has a great record in juniors

FairlyIncognito · 11/12/2022 12:35

Thank you all so much . Yes we hsve her instructor who would happily come too .
XelaM thank you, do you have more details you wouldn’t mind PMing?
shes not very big so i was thinking no bigger than 15hh2.

Sure, I will PM you. The pony in question is 14.2

Janieread · 11/12/2022 12:52

Surely a pony would be too small?

Local pony clubs are usually a good bet.

Janieread · 11/12/2022 12:53

(also if its mainly a show jumper it might not be great xc unless its evented)

You could try asking your local Pony Club DC if they know of any horses coming up for sale. Also try looking in different sections of HQ - we eventually found dd’s mare in the unaffiliated eventing section with a very nondescript photo of a bay mare against a brown fence. In the advert it said she had ‘potential’ to go up to 100 but when we checked her BE record she’d already done a couple of Novices with the pro who’d produced her but then she’d gone back to the ultra-wealthy family who owned her and she proceeded to run rings round their teenage daughter so her record was a bit chequered. She’s been a XC and jumping machine - dressage is still a work in progress 😉 but she’s already worth more than double what we paid for her. In the OP’s position I’d look at eventers (pure showjumpers often aren’t brave enough XC) with good XC records and patchy scores in the other two phases as that will bring the price down .. dressage and SJ can be improved dramatically with training and perseverance but ime horses are either happy and brave going XC or they’re not.
