Cobs clipped all year round. When ?

I’ve posted before about recently having a gypsy cob. I’ve realised that he should have been clipped in the Summer, I’ve never had a horse that needed it before. He’s moulting now and getting increasingly hairy. Would you just wait until October to give him a winter clip or clip now (I’m thinking there’s still warm weather to
come). For those that clip all year round when do you do it 🤷‍♀️ Thanks

I would clip all year round unless they are hogged or very woolly,
I also would hold out for a bit longer yet, maybe a month unless he’s in really hard work

Yes I don't clip mine in summer usually, esp not if not in hard work. The people that clip is usually for looks, i.e. to stop hogged manes from going mohawky, or keep clipped out legs tidy rather than because they need it. It's whether or not he's comfortable when working that's the defining factor, if he's just a 'normal' level of sweaty and can be managed by sponging off after, then leave him be, the moulting and then regrowth is just him sorting out for himself how much coat he needs, if he really is getting muck sweaty and struggling or itching afterwards then take some off under his belly and maybe on the neck or body, but be wary of any snap cold nights or stormy rainy days as then you'll have to throw a light rug on, which in turn might mess with him growing his winter coat, hence why I avoid summer clipping (or clipping in general really) unless absolutely necessary...

I have a mini cob for the first time and clipped her before pony club camp, so at end July, glad I did. I clipped her legs anyway at first as needed to sort sore bits there and get a grip over what is going on. One thing I would do differently is to leave a bit more hair over the coronet band. She was sensitive being clipped there and the hoof looks slightly raw. I also find her coat very greasy and work hard to keep her and tack clean. Wash numnah pretty much every ride and girth. There is a cob owners group on Facebook which I find helpful….

I clip Oct and Jan only
