Can anyone help with valuing my horse?

I'm thinking of selling my horse for various reasons, ongoing family and job pressures mainly. I'd have no idea what to price her at as in my mind she is worth a million quid! Some perspective would be great!

10 year old bay mare, 4 white socks. I reckon she'd be about bang on 15hh on a stick.

Registered part bred arab (33%), dad a PBA and mum an ID X Cob. She looks a bit like a Welsh body wise, leg in each corner and you could lay a table on her backside. She's a forward going, comfy ride.

Never been sick or sorry, only had the vet for routine jabs and had treatment for a cut on her hock (now healed can't see the scar, no issues since). Has good teeth.

Has never bucked or reared, not nappy but can be spooky (Arab!) Hacks out alone and with others, good in traffic (not keen on motorbikes but I forgive her for that!) Needs persuasion to load but does. Doesn't get too fat living out (drops weight in winter).

She is a very keen bean, could be very hot for the wrong rider (I wouldn't sell her to a really gung ho person or anyone remotely novicey), never runs out of energy, I spend a lot of time trying to rein it in but she's great fun and never naughty or nasty.

Ive had her for 4.5 years and she's never really been schooled apart from a bit when I first got her, some xc lessons and 2 weeks away schooling with a pro, who said she had a fabulous trot. Has seen jumps but not done a lot of it, can however jump like a stag and was keen once she got the hang of it, however not massively brave with new stuff. Has hunted, was great (behaved amazingly!)

Reading that back I think I sound mad even considering selling her but my life circumstances aren't great at the moment and truthfully I could really do with the money 😓

2.5k

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 03/07/2022 20:33

In the current market mid 4 figures? £4.5k

Pony prices are so crazy at the moment. My daughter's friend just bought a 14.2 hh pony for just under 20K. 😳It seems a lovely pony but 20K!

StressyYetMessy · 04/07/2022 22:49

Current market prices maybe £4-5k?

She sounds like she might be a bit spicy for someone who just wants to happy hack, but hasn’t the experience of schooling/competing etc that those more capable might want, particularly in a ten year old?

I think prices are going to come down a bit over winter with the cost of living squeezes for all but the most popular types- experienced PC/RC types, experienced competition horses with a solid record, solid happy hackers, with no ifs or buts that anyone can ride.

I’d advertise her at £5k with a view to negotiate?

EmmaC78 · 05/07/2022 23:17

I'd say £4000 to £5000 as well. Horse prices are crazy at the moment and a horse like yours that would have been £3000 a couple of years ago are now going for a couple of thousand more.

Chickmad · 05/07/2022 23:21

I know someone who has just paid nearly 5k for a coloured standard bred x who has done nothing.
So prices really are high atm. Even 20 year old happy hackers seem to be pushing 2.5k

Would you consider loaning her to an equine college? It’s the time of year when they’re often looking for horses for the next academic year, and she sounds as though she could be a good fit.
It would be an alternative to selling her that would buy you a year or two’s breathing space, and would improve her schooling.

I'd agree with the £4-5k benchmark as is, but if the money is a factor (and no judgement here if so) she could be a good candidate for moving to a really good, responsible sales livery, as she could potentially be worth a lot more. Someone who could get her looking smart, schooling nicely and out to some comps or hunting with a fashionable pack in the right part of the country, if she'd then vet cleanly and could be marketed as a proven sensible 'mums hunter' who has recently been clear round an unaffiliated 80cm hunter trial or similar, someone might well pay as much as double that. If she goes to them reasonably fit to start with I would have thought a competent pro with the right facilities and time available could achieve that relatively quickly, obviously it's the wrong time of year for hunting but something to think about in the late summer/early autumn maybe? Good responsible sales livery who would properly vet the buyer and match to the horse well rather than simply wanting the quickest buck isn't cheap of course but I do think in your case it could end up being worth it?

She could be worth more with a year of schooling and jumping. The above option would also give you a chance to decide whether you are doing the right thing.

I would never loan to an equine college. Restricted turnout. Usually a noisy, busy yard that drives a lot of horses mad or into shut down. Varied quality of riders and instruction. The horses aren't there to get the best of training, they are there as vehicles.

Slavetolove · 23/07/2022 22:22

I posted on horse and hound that my trainer says our loan horse wouldn’t be worth more than 2.5k and I was ripped to shreds. Everyone said she would be at least 7/8! For a green 10 year old cob who hasn’t done anything at all and didn’t even know how to lunge?

Prices have been stupid, going up ever since lockdown. I think they are starting to drop again and wonder where we'll be by next Spring, after things like higher fuel prices have really hit everyone 😕
