My DD has been riding for years, she has several lessons a week and goes to pony club. She's 14 and put an add on Preloved about wanting a part loan in the local area (I don't have the money to buy or keep a horse). A lady has come forward as she wants someone to exercise her dd's pony for a few months.

This is the first time we've done something like this, what sort of things should I be asking or be aware of? Any advice welcome

Cost
She says a few months, so I’d assume will be a short term thing?
What jobs would need doing, and to what standard. Some people are really anal about insanely neat beds etc.
Any quirks
Age of other children on the yard
Facilities on yard and do they need booking (we have one school that’s a free for all the other needs to be booked)
What would be the deal if the horse had an accident/pulled a shoe etc with your DD riding.
Anything she wouldn’t be allowed to do.
How many days a week.

Obviously go and meet the pony ,test ride ,scope the yard
As above plus
Who pays for vet bills ( accident or vac's)
Will dd be splitting all the responsibilities?
Exercise, tack cleaning , stable management, clipping , ordinary feed / bedding?
What kind of livery is the pony on?

Should say ordering feed not ordinary feed 🙄

Another thing is just have a really good chat with the owner, I think the biggest challenge with sharing is personality/ideology clashes with owner and loaner. Make sure you get on, if you don’t it’ll be REALLY hard work!!

What are the yard rules? Our yard is not very child-friendly - although we do have some teenaged owners and loaners, anyone under 16 years old must be directly supervised by an adult at all times. Would you be willing/able to do that with your dd?

Try the pony in all the situations she would be riding (hacking, schooling, jumping etc). Privately owned horses are a completely different ball game to riding school horses - they're often much more quirky and doing a lot less work, so can be quite a handful (especially if they're up for loan, as often this is due to the owner's lack of time).

What is the cost and what does that cover? Is she fully responsible for the horse on 'her' days (as is usual). What would happen if there was an emergency at the yard? e.g I was called late in the evening and had to deal with my loan horse choking, because the owner wasn't contactable at the time.

Insurance: Your DD will need rider's insurance for 3rd party cover - BHS gold membership would cover this, but wouldn't always cover the cost if the horse sustained an injury whilst she was riding it. If the owner has the horse insured, they would need to check with their insurer that this applied when someone other than the owner is riding. If not then you need to agree in advance what would happen in that scenario.

If you decide to go ahead, get a written contract in place. The BHS have a sample one which is aimed more at full loan than part loan, but can be adapted to suit and asks the right questions.
