Horsey book for Christmas present?

I’ve drawn a horse-owning colleague in the work Secret Santa (she’s into eventing and is breeding her mare so quite a serious equestrian) and she also loves reading, so I’m thinking a horsey book would be a good option. Has anyone any recommendations? Thanks!

Is there a chance of finding out if she was always horsey as a child and if she read the Jill series of books? These started with Jill's Gymkhana and were a first person tale of a teenager getting a pony and learning to ride and her varying successes. Every teenage wannabe rider read them 30+ years ago . Recently Jane Badger, a pony book enthusiast has written a couple of follow ups to the original series of 7 books (written in1950s), very much a follow up to the originals written by Ruby Ferguson.

Alternatively the Skint Dressage Daddy has a new book out, last one was quite amusing. (dressage is one of the disciplines of Eventing if you're not aware)

She may well have read the autobiographies of various riders, and pointless buying anything on theory as she's bound to know or have her own opinions it if she's brave enough to breed

Yes, I thought she might have all the autobiogs etc. I presume she probably was a horsey youngster as all her family are. I read the Jill books myself and loved them, so I’ll look for those, thanks!

Ooh, if it’s me i would love the Jill follow ups 😊

This is such a good question. I’d love to know of one for our 15 year old! Wondering if the Jane Badger ones are too young for her or not

If she loved the original Jill books, then the Jane Badger ones are in the exact same frame and indeed Jill is a little older, so I'd say ideal.

Find a biography of a famous eventer?

The most interesting historical breeding related book I have is Brother Mendel's Perfect Horse. Fascinating but not one many people I know have read. 'Stud' is also quite readable.

What about the Puffin Clothbound edition of Black Beauty? More for the look of the book than anything (I have a few of these and they are gorgeous)

Look at the Eventing Series by Natalie Keller Reinert on Amazon. Brilliant series, main character is a struggling eventer. Set in Florida but very similar to how things work here :)

Fiona Walker - Well Groomed.

Still my favourite horsey novel

(Not for kids)
