Should I get another one?

I own a lovely, but elderly, cob. He's 23, and until recently he was happy to potter about hacking and do a bit of low level schooling, which is about all I want to do these days. However, he has now sustained a bad ligament injury from which (my vet says) he is unlikely to recover, so I have had to retire him. He is now a large (lame) field ornament! I have had a couple of generous offers to ride other people's horses, so will still be able to hack out now and then should I wish to do so. I have no plans to part with my boy and I have him for life, but I miss my riding and am wondering about getting another horse. I keep him at a great livery yard quite close to home, and love it there; the people are great, good facilities and care, nice off road hacking etc. So ...

Pros --- I will still be able to ride "my own" horse rather than borrowing someone else's; I can still be part of stable life - stay in touch with friends etc; when I lose my old boy, I will still have a horsey pal to look after and ride; I'm retired so have plenty of time;

Cons --- I'm 67 years old with dodgy hips; my finances would be stretched to the limit to keep two on livery; my DH would probably not approve (a minor consideration!!); I would have to tend to both when at the yard, so more time involved; it's nearly October - we're coming into the winter, so not a great time to be getting another one to look after over the winter;

I'm sure you can all add to the pros and cons list. So ... WWYD? Get another or be content to keep my broken pony until he goes and then "retire" from horses myself. Please talk some sense into me Smile.

Could you move your older horse t a cheaper retirement livery ? I would def get another - but probably not till March or April next year !!

krustykittens · 22/09/2021 14:09

I would get another but would also advise to wait until next spring! Loaning can be fraught with difficulties and if you are the kind of person who gets attached easily (I am!) it can be fraught, emotionally.

krustykittens · 22/09/2021 14:39

Just realised I used the word 'fraught' twice in the same sentence....

tattychicken · 22/09/2021 14:52

Get another one. I wouldn't wait until the Spring, start looking now. It can take months for the right one to turn up.

EmmaC78 · 22/09/2021 23:48

I would get another one. Demand is high so I would start looking now too.

Mysa74 · 26/09/2021 14:53

I'd get another too. (Not two like I did!) Join the dodgy dealer FB page so you know who to avoid and ask around. It's easier (usually) to find a horse in autumn and winter when the reality of horse ownership hits home with the newbies and disillusioned than it is in the spring when optimism hits and the summer stretches out in front of us all...

GAH!! ... so a new development at the yard. Someone has handed in their notice (practically unheard of at my yard) and the YO has said she will hold the stable for me if I want it. She needs a yes/no answer by the end of October .... I'm wavering towards getting another one now!

Fate is telling you to get another one Wink

WildFlowerBees · 28/09/2021 10:15

Get another one! We have a 24yr old mare and have loaned another off someone we know well. It's good company for them.

Astrak · 09/10/2021 00:12

Definitely get another one. Fate is urging you on . . .

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 09/10/2021 00:23

It does sound like the fates have winked at you. Your lovely old guy may be with you for years to come. If not now then when?

tattychicken · 10/10/2021 13:34

Your post made me think of this....cheesy but true.

Should I get another one?
Macauley · 10/10/2021 13:43

Nothing to add but I'm in exactly the same position as you. My pros and cons list is identical to yours.
I'm unofficially looking but waiting till prices drop down a bit from the insane price they are at the moment.

Astrak · 10/10/2021 21:18

Tattychicken - I'm 76 and flouncy Arabian horse is 28.
This afternoon I hopped on and went for a life-affirming blast round the biggest field we've got! Brakes not working 100% (Sire was a very successful Arab racehorse).
Brilliant fun. Both returned with big grins!
Don't lose it - use it.

tattychicken · 11/10/2021 15:49

@Astrak I love an Arab!! SmileUsed to work with racing Arabs years ago, yours sounds wonderful. Keep on enjoying him.

Hi All, This thread has cheered me up no end! I am also a slightly past it 57, and looking for a new horse to join my 22yr old warmblood who has a touch of arthritis and doesn't want to do more than walk. I have had to think very hard about what I want - smaller, probably 15hh, older - no more 4yr olds, safe to hack alone and able to get out and about low level dressage, RC events maybe even a BE80 next year if we get our act together.

Am off to look at a rather expensive 9yr old this week, as I decided that I would try and buy the right horse for me rather than worry about the budget. Fingers crossed!

StillWalking · 16/10/2021 13:58

Just catching up after a short break. Thank you all for your insights. I would expect a horsey community to say "go for it" ... I have discussed it with some of my none horsey friends and they just don't get it!! I'm getting my courage up to tell (not ask!) my DH that another horse just might be arriving some time soon. I've got all the figures worked out and feeling more comfortable with it all.

@elastamum ... that's wonderful to read ... how did it go?

@StillWalking... Unfortunately she wasn't right for me. Although lovely, she wasn't very forward going and I had to work rather too hard in the school to get her to perform. However, it really helped clarify my thoughts as to what I am looking for. Safe and sane is a must, but I really want a forward going horse, just like my old girl when she was a little bit younger. Have found another one to look at next week, so fingers crossed again! If it make you feel any better, if I get another I will have 3 to do, but only one to ride Confused
