Hello,

I'm about to share a horse and need some insurance.

Can anyone recommend good rider insurance?

Thanks

BHS Gold membership gives you third party insurance in case horse damages property/ someone else. I don't have specific insurance for me though, just vet bill cover (I assume the owner covers this in a share??)

BHS gold membership

Thanks both, I'll look it up

The gold membership only includes personal and 3rd party cover.

I'd like something that covers the horse too if there's an accident.

I will check that the horse I'm riding is insured separately, but still, I'd like the make sure I'm covered.

Any other suggestions/recommendations?

The owner would normally cover the horse.

Harry Hall membership gives you insurance and some discounts. I don't know if it covers the horse too, but might be worth looking at

I've never heard of a sharer taking out their own insurance to cover the horse (3rd party and personal insurance, yes, this is sensible to get, BHS Gold is my go-to but Harry Hall club is another I often see mentioned) - the owner should have insurance themselves which should cover injury to the horse when being ridden. There are different types of policy, the basic policies just cover vets bills for treatment of the horse due to accident/injury/illness, more expensive ones pay out in the event of the horses death or permanent 'loss of use' and may also cover any expensive tack/equipment that could be damaged in an accident, but that's down to the owner what kind of policy they choose to pay for.

What you should do is ask the owner to check that his/her policy covers the horse being ridden by sharers (I think most policies say it covers anyone who has permission to ride the horse, but double-check) and I guess if there were additional costs to 'adding you' to the policy you could offer to cover these although personally I think that's the owner's responsibility, not yours. Buying your own separate policy for the horse would just double up and create confusion if there was to be a claim, but again I suppose if you want to be really thorough you could offer to pay the different for owner to upgrade to a premium policy to cover everything, loss of use, damage to tack etc although as I say I've had sharers and none of them have ever paid for more than their own rider insurance...

I’ve got this www.theinsuranceemporium.co.uk/products/equine/horse-rider

If I was looking to share a horse and the owner hadn’t taken out the relevant insurance for their horse I would walk away

DotBall · 24/08/2021 09:38

Don’t double cover the horse as neither may pay out in the event of an accident. Check with whoever currently owns or loans if there is insurance in place already.

In a part loan, you may have to pay your share of the cost of insurance, that’s normal, but you shouldn’t both have full cover.

I have BHS Gold for my personal / 3rd party cover.

Thanks all.

The owner has the horse insured and I've taken the BHS gold membership.

Thank you!
