Stable rugs, non sweaty linings?

Which stable rugs do you find best for your horse when it's really really cold? I don't want a heavyweight rug, but I want a stable rug that isn't polyester or nylon lined as they stink if horse gets warm.

Need one that keeps them cool(er) I'll prob clip her as she's on the warm side and only rug her if it's absolutely necessary but don't like the sweaty linings most rugs have.

Any ideas?

Thermatex or similar? OK if you don’t mind it covered in shavings.

You could get a few cotton sheets and use those underneath your stable rug - they can usually go in a normal washing machine in a laundry bag, so are more practical to keep clean.

I have a pure wool rug from here: www.fridayfox.co.uk/For-Horses
It’s lovely, breathable and warm, but I haven’t figured out how to keep it clean!

I’ve never noticed by horse getting sweaty in a stable rug but then I fully clip and probably under rug according to some people.
The majority of horses do not need 350, 450g rugs. The most mine gets is a 200g and even then that’s during the really really cold snaps we have.

That’s a good point - I was assuming the op found synthetic fibre fabrics sweaty in general (lots of people do, including me, so I guess some horses will as well). But it’s also important not to over rug as any horse will sweat if too hot. I find my horse only needs a 200g in his stable if temps are well into minus figures, or in the field if there’s an icy wind. I don’t clip but he is fine-coated.

I was going to say use a sacrificial liner and a thinner rug like this.

That said I bloody hate stable rugs, they seem to just end up stinking of poo after one night! I always just left turnout rugs on after taking them off and giving horse a brush over etc before replacing, but I know that's not for everyone and possibly reflected the sort of yards I was on, most of us did the same.

I won't put anything more than 200 on her if it's really cold, it's gets really windy where we are which can make it feel much colder. In general I find the nylon and polyester linings sweaty. I'll look at a cotton liner. Thank you
