What do we think she’s worth? (Sorry long)

I am tentatively thinking about selling one of my horses in the Autumn.

I’ve got a sharer who adores her and is interested but we are a bit stuck on a price. I don’t want to give her away for pennies.

The ins and outs are
16.2/3hh 5yo TB mare, beautiful bay ex racehorse, looks the part and made good money at the sales as a yearling. Never made the grade in training. I think she’s stunning but wouldn’t be to the taste of someone who didn’t like TBs /finer horses.
A nice mover - not super flashy but very correct. Nicely balanced. Can be a touch green in canter - just leans and gets a bit flat - typical TB, but could go and do an intro test tomorrow, and wouldn’t completely disgrace herself in a prelim.
Went to a few in hand shows as a 2 and 3 YO and did well against some smart warmblood/sport horse youngstock including placing at county level. Didn’t compete as a 4yo for obvious reasons!

On the ground she’s lovely, a completely non horsey partner/teenager could bring her in/turn her out etc. Very polite, nearly managed to teach her to pick her feet up for you. Can be clipped loose in her box, stands like a rock. Fine with the farrier but can fidget, isn’t nasty we distract her with snacks. Loads herself and travels perfectly with or without company although has never been in a trailer. Does need daily turnout, wouldn’t cope at all at a yard where they didn’t have winter turnout etc, usually goes out for a minimum of 6 hours a day. Gets stressy and colicy without this.

Ridden; To mount 90% of the time she’s good, sometimes she forgets she’s not in racing anymore and figets at the block.
Very sweet in the school - if not a touch green. Really enjoys her work and tries hard for you. If she’s very fresh she can be a bit spooky/tense, but this is nothing beyond the ability of a well balanced rider, won’t do anything nasty and quickly gets over it, is more the sort if she’s unsure to grind to a halt than run off. Nicely off the leg but not sharp and in a loose ring snaffle at all times. She is a big TB so does need someone who can keep a big horse together. Slightly typical TB in that (we’re on a working farm) she’ll ignore the farm machiney, scrapping dogs, noisy livestock, and our school is next to a road and she ignores even the biggest of lorries, but might have the odd spook at her own farts.
To give you an idea of her general character someone we were in the school with recently got decked by their horse who proceeded to run laps and refuse to be caught and she stood like a police horse until that was sorted. Has been to a local yards indoor a few times and been perfect even on a windy day when it was rattling.

Jumping is a work in progress but showing promise. She won’t be the next Big Star, but is sweet and sensible to and away from a fence, can get a bit forward but doesn’t get strong or silly. Very clever if she gets to it wrong, despite being green she’ll help you out.

Hacking, we’ve mostly done in company as we have a lot of farm traffic. However she’s been fine with everything she’s met, even been ok with noisy tarpaulin (after a quick gawp), and a field of horses hooning around next to her. Can be a bit unsure of cyclists coming from behind, doesn’t do anything nasty just jumps, and can need a bit of reassurance. Has hacked alone a handful of times and been fine just needed riding forward.

All in all a nice horse who I think will make a cracking allrounder, not at all nasty, but needs a decent rider to help with her education, and would probably be a bit too spooky and forward for someone nervous. However would be the perfect first ex racehorse for someone wanting to dip their toe in!

Sorry for the essay… just curious as to what she would be worth, I can’t make sense of this current market! She’s not going to make the p2p/team chase horse i was hoping she would but also don’t want to give her away for pennies as I do like her!

I don't know why I clicked on this thread as know nothing about horses, but that was a fascinating read.

cocoloco987 · 31/05/2021 23:09

For the horse you describe I'd prioritise home over price. Sounds a gem and would be awful to fall in to the wrong hands. How much is the sharer able/prepared to pay? Apart from the last year or so such a horse wouldn't go for much at all. Market is crazy now but green ex racers still haven't caught up massively with the trend.

I'm the same. She sounds great
chickenwinghot · 31/05/2021 23:13

Completely agree with @cocoloco987.

If I were to name a price I would say in the £3,000 to £4,000 region for a complete third party buyer.

If the sharer were to purchase and you know she would go to a good home - I would personally take that into account if money is no object Smile

lastqueenofscotland · 31/05/2021 23:14

Sharer isn’t sure! If we can’t sort something I won’t sell her and show her as a hack (much to the amusement of all my friends...). I do really like her but she’s not not the attitude to P2P (shes too kind and chilled!)

What area are you in? A horse selling in the south east would be a different price to one in Wales.

Not really . Nationally prices are up

I'd say in the region of 5-7k but HOME always more important than price . I'd ask your sharer to make you a reasonable offer and go from there .

I've seen 17-18 year old happy hackers going for 3-4 atm which is crazy . They should be 1-2 max IMO

DENMAN03 · 31/05/2021 23:22

Prices are higher at the moment.. prob £6-£8k

chickenwinghot · 31/05/2021 23:28

I’ve seen experienced low level eventing (BE80 and 90s) ex Racers go for £4,500 - so disagree with some of these higher valuations.

Sadly I think there is still some stigma around TBs - though I personally think they’re lovely!

Absolutely not.

Current prices are crazy. You can't buy much for under 10k at the moment which is absurd but people are paying. Horses that used to be 2-3k are now 7k upwards.

From what you have described I would say she sounds lovely and what most people want. I would say based on current horse prices anywhere between 6- 8k min. Maybe less if home is more important

To give you some context friend just brought a lovely but green ex racer for 7k it doesn't sound nearly as schooled as yours . Others friends purchased a 5 year old cob for 10k .

Prices shock me daily at the moment

DraughtyWindow · 31/05/2021 23:42

She sounds lovely. I’d say anywhere between £5k and £8k dependent on where you are in the UK. I’m in SE and prices are ridiculous down here.

chickenwinghot · 31/05/2021 23:47

Again - I disagree. I have a friend who bought an ex racer today for £2,000. 5 years old and granted a lot greener than the one OP described.

Prices shock me daily too - and OP I would be very happy if you received 8k and a lovely new owner for your mare!

SaturdayMood · 31/05/2021 23:53

Pre covid 2.5-4K but who knows now, it seems to be a case of pick a number with at least five figures in it. Agree home would be more important, she sounds potentially quirky.

lastqueenofscotland · 01/06/2021 00:00

She’s not at all quirky Smile just a bit green, and spooky if she’s not been ridden for a while.
She’s super straightforward just not for a cretin/nervous wreck.

Not off the track TB's so much though. Yes they are a whole lot more than normal as you'd pick one up for free or for a few hundred for the good ones who'd had a bit of retraining but I religiously follow a racehorses off the track Facebook page as considering one for a mother daughter share in future and Ive only seen one horse at the 7k mark and it was ready to go eventing. They mostly go for 3-5 (or less for the bampots)

cocoloco987 · 01/06/2021 06:47

Is it price she's not sure on or whether she actually wants the horse? If it's the latter I'd make less effort to negotiate than if it's a difficulty to find a large sum at once but she adored and will keep the horse forever.

Structuredsward · 01/06/2021 07:05

Op I wouldn't let a horse like that go below £5k and it could probably could go for as much as £7k. ATM. It sounds as if she has great potential as an all rounder and there's a lot of demand for that currently. Whether that demand will start to drop off as things get back to a bit normality I don't know but I would seize the moment just in case.

maxelly · 01/06/2021 10:14

Yeah I was thinking £3.5k pre-Covid and maybe £5k now (to a good home etc)? It's hard because what people are saying about very high demand for good-looking sane all rounders with potential to do well in a variety of spheres is true, but I do still think you can knock a good amount off the price because of her being an ex-racer compared to if she was an ISH or WB, I think the old prejudice is still going strong (sadly!). I too have heard crazy tales of fresh out of the trainers yard non-straight forward 3yos being sold for mid 4 figures where previously they would have been given away, but I am honestly not sure that's that wide spread/true, may just be the old rumour mill doing its work?

Plus whilst she sounds lovely she is still young and lacking miles on the clock to really be marketed as a true ready-to-go, could pop round a BE80 tomorrow competition type OR a super-easy-put-your-granny-up school mistress/family horse, so if you were to put onto open market it would have to be as needing some work... here's an example of an ex racer that's done quite a bit more than yours and claims easy in all ways, on for £6k...

frostyfingers · 01/06/2021 10:41

I think 5k-6k would be about right - potential sells and it sounds like she has loads. If you were going to the open market I’d put the higher price and negotiate down if necessary, but if your sharer is the right fit for her then 5k sounds perfectly reasonable. It works both ways, the horse would have a nice home which you have effectively vetted, and the sharer would have a nice horse who’s history she knows and she’s already familiar.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 01/06/2021 12:33

Young, green ex-racers aren't exactly in short supply. Even in this market, I think those pricing her in excess of 5k are either bonkers or in a very different part of the country from me. Pre-covid I've have thought 2k a decent price, and no more than double that now. The horses going for big money are those that are already safe, schooled and experienced, or those with serious potential. Lovely as this mare sounds, it's going to take a lot of work from someone to get her going at any reasonable level.

FanFckingTastic · 01/06/2021 12:34

Prices are bonkers at the moment but I think that it would be a stretch to ask for much more than 5k given that she's only 5, an ex racer, is on the bigger side - so maybe a bit too big for a teenager etc, and is green. I bought my mare at the end of last year and was regularly seeing horses around the £7/8k mark but they generally had the basics e.g. some kind of jump/ HT experience even at low level. If her breeding is particularly good then you might be able to ask for more but it sounds like she's not really done a lot as yet. Personally, I would be inclined to negotiate on price with the loaner if you are happy they are a good fit together. If you wanted more for her then maybe hang on to her for six months or so and get some experience under the belt. Good luck!

lastqueenofscotland · 01/06/2021 12:51

Thanks all this has been helpful! I had planned to get her out more but bloody covid and she wouldn’t stop growing!!!
I’m planning on getting her out and about more, starting with some stressage next weekend, and would want the summer with her.
I’ve got a ballpark figure to mention to the sharer and if she’s happy we’ll go with that! If not I’ll hold on to her and adapt my thruster personality to suit her. I’d not sell her on the open market.

OP posts:
lastqueenofscotland · 01/06/2021 13:04

She is (in racing terms) beautifully bred, proper Juddmonte pedigree, went through book 1, made big money, and may have some value as a brood mare to racing but I’d not want to put her through that mill, but out of racing I don’t think her breeding is of any value to anyone.

OP posts:
Trivium4all · 01/06/2021 19:14

I've no idea on price, but she sounds lovely! Would be lovely, too, if you and her sharer came to an agreement, but either way, sounds like the type of horse that will never want for a nice home.

cocoloco987 · 01/06/2021 21:27

No you're right the breeding and prize money isn't relevant. Fwiw I've seen one come up today, a 7 yo highly successful chaser out of a top yard (who do lots of schooling work with them that many yards don't do) Huge potential to go far but super easy to do ie suitable for a kid coming off ponies for the first time to take eventing and they are asking 4K for this horse on the open market
