Anyone successfully dealt with feather mites?

Just that really. My rescue pony that I got last August has got mites. Sometimes she wont stamps and itches but other times she does.
I scrubbed her legs yesterday as one was a bit red and sore.
My friend has said the only way to get rid of is with injection which means getting her on trailer or paying call out vet. I just dont know what to do....

Clip off the feathers & put pig oil with sulphur on. Worked for mine.

I had great success with Frontline (the spot on type) for dogs - although I know it is not licenced for horses my Vet said it was ok to use.

I get huge syringes of frontline from my vet specifically for horses. Give them a call and ask as this is worth trying first. That said my experience is that sometime it works but not always.
If you have the jabs you need two or sometimes three spaced out by 10ish days. This is because it only kills the adults and the eggs will hatch out so it needs repeating.
Whatever treatment you do will then need to be repeated every three months.

Dcob had them when we got him. His owner said that he got them periodically and had all his life. I used neem oil on them the first time I saw the red patch on his heel and they were gone within days. We've had him 6 years now, bedded on straw which is supposed to harbour them, but he's never had them since. He was clipped out too,so it was far easier to treat.

Deosect and clipping off feathers worked for us. Fingers crossed they never come back!

Pig oil!

countrygirl99 · 23/04/2021 08:25

I don't think they do the jabs anymore. They were a cow wormer that has gone off market. They stopped working for my boy after about 3 years. Then I had success with fronting for a couple of years. Now I use pig oil and sulphur with need oil and occasional deosect. All you can do is keep on top of them. My horse hates the smell of pig oil and sulphur so I have to catch him before I mix it or I can't get near him. He is fine once I start slathering it on though.

Deosect worked but needed to be put on every couple of weeks but Benzyl benzoate has worked for a year. It's a bit of a nightmare to get it on as all the feather needs saturating but it did the trick. I used a spray bottle just parting the hair and a washing up sponge to get it onto the skin. I've changed from straw to pellets and bedsoft as well to break the cycle.

Dectomax injections (2, 10 days apart) have kept my hairy cob clear all winter.

Muddledupme · 29/04/2021 20:29

Dectomax is fab if you know the source of the mites and can eliminate it.

Either flea spray for dogs or wash with head and shoulders shampoo - both recommended by my vet and worked!
