Calmer recommendations please?

There are so many on the market and looking at the ingredients has tied me in knots. Has anyone had any real success with a particular one?
It must be reasonably palatable and able to go into a small quantity of feed (fat pony), but other than that I'm open to suggestions

Thank you, in advance :)

A friend of mine has used these which she says have helped. Personally I'd look at the behaviour and why he/she needs calming and try to address that.

I have used calming cookies on a pony who stresses about going out competing with great success. He is much calmer when we use them. You don’t have to put them in a feed so very easy to use

The ones that MrsKingFisher linked to are the ones that were recommended to me. If you go on their Facebook page they have a 20% off discount code for today. I would be interested to hear how you get on with them.

WorriedMillie · 06/04/2021 11:42

Thanks all, we have got calming cookies and apparently they come in powder form too, which I think may be more suitable, so I’ll look into that
We have explored the behaviour with an experienced instructor/eliminated any physical issues with the vet, verdict is she’s a slightly spooky mare (I’ve had her since she was a baby (she’s 18 now) and I’m just looking for a slightly quieter life, as I’m less gung ho since becoming a parent Easter Grin)

I've had great success with Science Supplements ProKalm.
You don't need a loading dose, you can use it as and when you need it.
I'd tried quite a few before which were a complete waste of money.

RatherBeRiding · 14/04/2021 15:24

Oh yes ProKalm- bloody love it! It is the ONLY calmer that has got my very feisty mare through a dressage test without exploding. And I love that it a) kicks in quickly and b) wears off quickly. But it definitely takes the edge off without affecting performance.

As for a day in, day out calmer - never found anything that made any difference to her "general" behaviour but ProKalm really made a difference for competing.

cherrytree63 · 15/04/2021 08:03

@RatherBeRiding we used to get a spook-spook-buck-buck move, with the ProKalm the spook became a half halt Grin.
I seldom use it now, keep it mainly for hacking (wish they had a human version).

Have you tried Magnesium Oxide? Cheap and effective, also good for feet and metabolism. Many horses are deficient in spring. If you need something long term I'd go for magox and salt first.

FreedomFromLockdown · 22/04/2021 10:25

Looking at prokalm does anyone know the dose? It’s not clear how far a £50, 1.1kg tub would go.

QuestionableMouse · 22/04/2021 10:51

I was also going to recommend the calming cookies. You can give them with the power too, iirc.

Might be worth looking at her diet in general too- my coblet was a spooky bugger until we took him off his chaff which had alfalfa in it and was basically rocket fuel to him!

cherrytree63 · 26/04/2021 23:36

@FreedomFromLockdown
The scoops are 16g
You don't need a loading dose or to use a set dose every day.
I used to give 2 scoops at night, one in the morning to my 15.3 500kg horse. Now he's older and more settled I only use it occasionally, mostly if hacking alone I give 2 scoops half hour before.

Silent 4 by Ron Fields worked on a feisty connemara.
