Hello all, I am after a highland colt yearling to join my horses as I have always fancied one and now have room, does anyone know of any coming up for sale please?

If you wanted a yearling your best bet would be going to a stud. No personal dealing with them myself but I know the Talisker stud sell a small amount of their youngstock every year.

Thanks @lastqueenofscotland, yes I have found them on Facebook will see if they are selling any...

I believe Brown Bread also have youngstock.

Good luck, Highlands are amazing :)

CountryCob · 07/04/2021 15:31

Thanks, it looks like I might be in conversation about one, I used to ride some when I was younger for a breeder and now have space for another so am quite excited at the prospect.....

I am green with envy Envy ! Grin. Absolutely adore Highland ponies. I tried to buy one four years ago and found them quite hard to get hold of as they are much in demand (especially if broken/over 3 yrs which is what I was after). I gave up in the end and bought a shire! If I was doing it again, as pp said, I would contact a few studs and get myself up to Scotland on a buying/visiting mission (obviously not easy atm).

Wbeezer · 07/04/2021 15:43

I follow the Highland Pony society on facebook, they sometimes have ponies for sale listed usually a few yearlings.

Heres one in Aberfeldy.

CountryCob · 07/04/2021 15:56

@Wbeezer that one is now sold! I asked last week. I think few come up that are older in my experience too, @MyBeloved do you know if brown bread have any contact details? I can’t find a website. @Oldbeams thank you, it is something I have been planning for a few years, although I question my own wisdom in trying to do so now in a horse sale boom pandemic, it’s the first time I have had room....

There seems to be a late backed 8 year old mare available for viewing on Equestrian Market Place but I can't find the date of the advert?

They are a rescue but specialise in Highlands. They have a very good reputation for being extremely helpful.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks both, I have one to look at the weekend after next which I am hopeful of. I bet your shire is lovely @Oldbeams

We've had to take him back to basics but he is lovely thanks Countrycob and they make great riding horses for old folk like me .

HighlandCowbag · 11/04/2021 16:34

I bought a highland filly as a 2 year old direct from Tower stud. They aren't prolific fb posters but if you join either the Highland Pony fb page or The Friendly Highland pony page you should be able to get contact details. I'm very pleased with mine. Also Lochlands pony stud have a fb page and Whitefield have a page. Whitefield usually have quite a few foals born each year.

Any particular reason a colt?

CountryCob · 11/04/2021 17:13

Hello @HighlandCowbag, so just prefer geldings to ride really, looking at one that has recently been gelded next weekend which is ideal as I have a mini mixed herd. Mares can be lovely it is just preference. Glad you hear you are pleased with yours, I agree not that many advertised and I found the one I am looking at by going through the studs listed with the highland pony society

Ah I see, well good luck for next week. If he's not for you give me a shout and I will do you a list of studs that may have a bachelor herd they aren't actively marketing but sometimes have stock available.

CountryCob · 13/04/2021 16:43

Thanks very much @HighlandCowbag

Highlands are fab love my chap best "ah sod it" purchase ever.

Try looking at Lurgan Highland Ponies on Facebook - its a small stud local to me but Sally breeds cracking foals and sometimes has young stock available.

I can't recommend Dawn Cunningham-Reid and her Balleroy stud highly enough. She turns out stunning animals with lovely temperaments. I have her best one, though. Wink

Thanks everyone, I bought the youngster I looked at and am making ready for his arrival! @MrsLumsden your highland is beautiful
