Stock pin

I’m not a horse person at all, but it has been suggested that I give a stock pin as a present to a keen equestrienne.
Do I buy something sold specifically as a stock pin, or does any bar brooch or tie pin do the job? Also, do they tend to get lost? Meaning, is something expensive likely to be a waste of money?
Many thanks for any advice.

What does the intended recipient do - dressage/hunting etc?

Stock pins are specific in that they tend to be more bulky than a tie pin - they have to go through layers of thick stock.

Having said that, I hunt in a silk stock and have quite a dainty stock pin. The hunting stock market has a good choice of pins ☺️

Ooh I never expected such a quick reply! It will be used for hunting.

And showing. Definitely not dressage.

Depends on the type of stock - back when I used to do dressage I wore very lightweight stocks and used a variety of vintage/antique brooches rather than something specifically sold as a stock pin. So long as the pin bit will go through the material and the catch is good I don't think it matters.
