Bedding

Recommendations for the best low dust bedding that composts quickly?

I think I've narrowed it down to aubouise (if that's how it's spelt) or wood pellets, shavings apparently take forever to rot and cardboard/paper is a no-no for me as I know I hate it!

Ponies are tidy but prone to cough.

I use wood pellets on the bottom with aubiouse on top to make it comfy. It works well especially for my cob who wees for England.

Wood pellets are brilliant in the winter but dusty in the summer. We use equinola in the summer.

I love wood pellets. Fast and cheap. I deep litter, it makes a solid base in a few days with a fluffier top layer. I skip out morning and night and take the wet patch out when it starts to squelch, every 7 days or so... I can do all 3 of my beds, hay and feed in half an hour if necessary and it all fits in one wheel barrow. It doesn't smell either so I can pop to Tesco on the way home in a way that I wouldn't've dared when on straw. If the weather means the bed feels damp I put the new bag in dry and mix it round. If the bed starts to look dusty I put the new bag in damp, or if I have enough bed in the stable, just give it a quick spray with the hose and mix it round... Best of all if cheeky pony tips her water over I just pour an extra bag on top of the flood and it's all fixed. Nothing wasted and no need to dig half the bed out Grin

Speaking from experience pellet bedding are a pain with a horse that likes to kick it's poo all over the stable, they seem to dry out and scatter more, but they are a dream with a tidy horse. I preferred straw or miscanthus pellets to wood.
