Horse insurance -how much and which one?

I’m currently working out how to afford a horse of our own. I was wondering who are the best insurers? And roughly how much do you spend?

We’re looking for a 15hh-ish, probably cob-ish. We have a maximum of £6k to spend. Hope to do some competing—cross country and/or showjumping at a beginner’s level. Assuming there are no pre-existing conditions.

So far I’ve looked at a few sites and it’s come out at about £50-£55 per month.

Any advice gratefully received!

Two on Animal Friends, £34 & £40 per mo respectively. Insured for purchase price £2950 & £3400. Excess is £250.
If horse costs more than £5k you will need a 5 stage vetting. -£200 or so.

I’m with Petplan Equine and it’s about £45 a month

DD’s pony is 12, 14.2 cob, no pre-existing health conditions. Purchase price £3.5k. Excess is £200, includes vet fees (although I can’t remember how much), rider, tack and liability

It was on the higher side of the quotes I got, but out vet will only do direct pay with NFU or Petplan Equine - I didn’t want to have to find the cash upfront for a large vet bill and then claim it back

Animal Friends will pay vet directly

I pay £65 a month to NFU, I wouldn’t go to any other insurer

Mist vets will accept direct payment from NFU and Petplan but it's best to ask your vet if they will take direct payment from other companies as not all will.
I was with NFU. It's not tbe cheapest but they paid out some big claims without quibbling. When your horse falls ill on a Friday evening and is PTS at 3.30am on Saturday that counts for a lot.

NFU Mutual - read the policy wording online and compare it to the measly cover Animal Friends offer. You get what you pay for. You’ll need a vetting if you insure for over £5k. Min cover is Loss of Animal. You can add Vets Fees (@£5,000 per claim (unlimited, unrelated claims in a year) Excess is £145. Cheaper to have PL cover with BHS Gold M’ship. Although NFU Mutual policy also covers the policyholder to ride any horse not belonging to them and covers any rider riding your horse with your permission, so cover is a little wider. Hope that helps. Smile

I'm with insurance emporium and paid £35 a month for 5 year old cob.

NFU - ours is now 21 so we pay a higher premium which is c£850 per annum for £5k vets fees and £150 excess. I had a £7k vets bill a few weeks after renewal a couple of years ago and was paid the Max £5k within a few days.
