Is anyone a Redwings Guardian , or rehomed from a rescue ?

I’m currently halfway through the application process for a Redwings pony to keep my other girl company as she keeps jumping out to go and find a friend even through she’s 41 ! I’ve done the form, sent the photos as they’re not doing home visits , given them my vet and farrier details and am pretty much just waiting for her to be brought home.

If you do have a rescue girl, what happens after that ? Do they come and do periodic checks ? Or are you pretty much left to it ? I’m not concerned , either way she’ll be cosseted to within an inch of her life , but I just wondered ? Any advice or experiences appreciated .

Hello OP, no experience or advice really but I have supported Redwings for years, I'm a huge animal lover! You're doing a wonderful thing! Your other pony will be happy to have a pal. She's a good age at 41, bless her.

I rescued from the RSPCA, I think it's probably different to redwing though. They came out and did the initial visit before I rehome, and then they did a check up at around 3 months. After that they signed the horse over and that's the last I heard from them

One of mine is from a major animal charity rescue, although indirectly as she was initially rehomed to an (IMO) totally unsuitable owner on my yard as a ridden pony with potential as a novice child's pony (TBF I have only heard 2nd hand what the rescue people actually said about this so not sure of the full story, always has sounded somewhat fishy to me) - pony was and is totally unsuitable for novices and was very very green and had been fairly poorly broken in either by the centre or by previous owners. So not altogether a happy story...

As a PP said the rescue did an initial home check and then a 'settling in' check a short while after she was rehomed and then nothing after that, pony was fully the property of her new owner - they didn't seem at all bothered when pony/owner started to struggle and when she was subsequently given to me by her owner who couldn't cope any more. Perhaps they would have felt differently had she been put up for sale or moved yards or similar, I guess as she was staying in the same place they'd visited they were happy enough but didn't know me from Adam.

I would have thought taking on a small pony as a companion should be pretty straight-forward from any of the major rescues (RSPCA, WHW, Blue Cross etc - don't want to say which of these mine was since as I say I really only heard half the story and not from a totally reputable source either so don't want to seem like I'm slagging them in any way, they do a difficult job on limited resources etc), but if you are wanting a ridden pony I'd tread very very carefully and either way do ask plenty of questions and be aware pony will become 100% your responsibility once signed over, they are unlikely to want to take him/her back if anything goes wrong including health conditions etc which if you take an elderly one on are not unlikely...

Thanks for your thoughts . I’m only wanting her as a field ornament to keep my son’s retired girl company , and because we’ve got way too much land just for her , so there will be virtually no demands of her at all . I’m used to horses with ‘issues’ - I’ve never actually had one without ! So unless she’s properly awful , and I’m fairly sure she’s not , then we should be fine .
