There is a 10 page thread today on the general talk part of MN, entitled
"Things which are inexplicably expensive"
I am only up to page 3 but haven't seen horses on the list yet, though someone has posted "people" !

That remi ds me - livery due this week and I need to order more joint supplement. Farrier due in a couple of weeks £🐎£

Owning horses is like getting your wages and throwing them on the muck heap each month 😖

I've tried so many ways to do it, and every way is expensive! Couldn't be without them though 😊

@countrygirl99
@pinkpolo
I hear you both ! Every way you try to calculate & re organise re facilities, farrier, feed etc, it's still expensive & a juggling act, but where would we be without horses !
Brew Brew for you both Smile

I think part of the problem is that it’s so easy to collect horses. ATM we have the DCs retired pony, my home bred field ornament, DD2s injured horse who we hope can become a field ornament and DD4s loan horse. All are at livery and vets fees this year have been huge. I wouldn’t be without any or them though.

I'm a relatively new horse owner and actually finding it cheaper than I'd feared, even on assisted livery. DH I think may disagree!! He hadn't reckoned on things like teeth, back man, saddle fitting etc...although I am trying to pay for those from my personal allowance rather than the joint family account whenever I can afford to. I reckon all in my horse is costing about £500 pm at worst though and that's in a "bad" month when treatments are required, with all feeds etc factored in. Could be worse?

My boy is 21 now and has a bit of arthritis so we don't compete anymore. But with bute and joint supplement I spend just as much.

... I have recently sent my sons loan eventer back to owner to be used for hacking as he has developed arthritis in his hocks and was finding jumping too painful.

Given DS as no horse now and a year out travelling doesn't look a good idea, hes going to Uni in Sept and for the 1st time in 20 years I am horseless, which I am really really missing. I have signed up to volunteer at the local BE & BD events instead.

My bank account however has now some money in it and I am selling off everything from lorry to tack!

I find it best to just not keep track or think about it..... Or stick with 25 year old figures 👍

I quite like this time of year as I have very few horsey outgoings, £35 a week for grass livery plus £10 a week for the farrier. He has very little hard feed so other costs are minimal. It is a nice break from the £400+ a month in winter.
