I’m really concerned about our retired 21 year old
She has quite bad arthritis and we keep her out as much as possible and is on half a Danillon a day and a supplement. She’s her own worst enemy as she doesn’t just go out and mooch. She canters round her paddock, bucking and broncing and having a fine old time. The ground is quite hard at the moment so we’re having a bit of a hard time keeping her comfortable so have upped her Danillon to 1 per day.
Beginning of last week she came in quite lame (on a different leg to the arthritis leg) with a small puncture wound. Cleaned her up, bit of sudocreme and left her in the following day. The day after she looked fine, no swelling or heat, but very sore and uncomfortable on the arthritis leg so we turned her out.
However, that night she came in very lame again on the cut leg. Spoke to the vet over the phone, sent photos of the wound and was advised that given the arthritis she needed to keep going out and to give the vet a call Monday/Tuesday this week if she was no better
She has got lamer and lamer on the cut leg, plus she’s struggling with her arthritis leg. Spoke to the vet Monday, sent videos of her walking and of the wound. Wound is fine, healed nicely but vet now thinks the wound is a bit of a red herring and the lameness is caused by something else and that we need to continue with box rest and can walk in hand for 20 minutes a day and is on 2 Danillon a day
Oldie absolutely hates being in, it’s awful for her arthritis plus our other pony has to stay in with her. She was hobbling again this morning - the leg with the cut is still really bothering her and her arthritis leg is awful. She’s kicking the crap out of her stable as she wants out.
I’d really like the vet to come out and see her. Something is going on with that leg and she’s obviously very uncomfortable. Vet says she’ll have a look next Tuesday if no improvement but I don’t really want to wait that long
Our oldie is very stoic, if it hurts, it hurts
