The 'airs above the ground' out hacking are something to behold, too!

Elbels · 05/03/2020 12:32

Reading this does not make me miss working at livery yard as a teenager in the winter months. Oh the leg hosing!

Does anyone's horses get rain scald? Friend's gelding has had mud fever and now is covered in patches of rain scald on neck and face and back and she's at her wits end. Never dealt with it before! Vet just advised flamazine cream on the areas.

Biddie191 · 05/03/2020 14:45

For rain scald you can get a liquid treatment called Imaverol. I'm not sure if you have to get it on prescription or not, but you basically dilute it down as per instructions and rub it in to the affected areas, and allow to dry. Repeat 7 days later - kills the bacteria and fungi associated.

If the horse can be stabled at least some of the time to allow it to dry out, it really helps. I've used it on mine a couple of times, does a great job. Use gloves though!

Biddie191 · 05/03/2020 14:48

It's usually used for ringworm, but my vet prescribed it for rain scald, and it worked really well

puppymouse · 05/03/2020 16:33

Thanks @Biddie191 I'll pass on. Poor boy Sad

Songofsixpence · 05/03/2020 16:59

A woman in our barn has an old boy that gets rain scald quite frequently - she swears by washing the areas with very dilute hibiscrub, rinse well then gently pick off any scabs then dab on sudocreme - don’t plaster it on, just a swipe across any sore bits

puppymouse · 05/03/2020 17:03

Thanks @Songofsixpence I think it's confusing her that he doesn't have scabs on these patches but vet confirmed it is same virus as mud fever (which I didn't realise - mine has never had it).

Songofsixpence · 06/03/2020 11:10

Sun is out! Yay!

This was the me this morning after 2 days straight stuck inside 😂

Ahhhh @Songofsixpence that made me chuckle. Mine is out 24/7 thank God. We went for a very relaxed dog walk together this morning in hand to make the most of the sunshine!

Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple · 06/03/2020 21:35

It’s just vile
Luckily we have a school as can’t be bothered to stop through mud to hack out
Mine usually out at night and in for variable time in the day but this winter they have often stayed in for days as they just don’t want to go out in wet fields. We are on clay and it’s not as bad as many yards as we have stones under the gateway but the whole field is just squelchy.
Had new straw delivery today as mine lasted half winter instead of one and a half winters, he has run out of hay to sell and will have no straw next year as no farmers locally have been able to sow any crops !

Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple · 06/03/2020 21:38

Oh and my mare had the weird rain scald thing that’s been going round, despite being rugged. Theory is she got a bit sweaty under the rug ? It was horrible, haven’t been able to ride her for weeks as it was all along her back. Has been very hard to clear up, even with. Keeping it dry, imaverol and antibacterial shampoo every few days

Bigsighall · 15/03/2020 20:47

Just when we had a dry day, the rain came back today. I wanted to cry when I looked at the mud soup today. Forecast looking ok for next couple of weeks but I imagine it’ll take that long for the mud slide to stop. Oh and we still have that stage of drying mud concrete in feet. Ugh, anyone else feel like selling up?!

This is mud related according to vet - this patch is now double the size and needs daily coating in flamazine. Might cry.

Oh wow that looks awful. Poor pony

OP posts:
Songofsixpence · 16/03/2020 09:05

That looks awful. Has his diet or anything been changed? A horse at our yard has something that looks quite similar - £100s of pounds worth of tests later, it’s allergic to Horsehage

We’ve been quite lucky with the weather down here. They’ve been out every day for the last week or so, there’s been a few passing showers but nothing too horrendous

Our YO rolled their field yesterday

puppymouse · 16/03/2020 16:01

Nothing's changed but it seems the vets are seeing a lot of this at the moment. Mud and coat changes Sad

Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple · 22/03/2020 20:25

That’s like my mare puppymouse.
I haven’t been able to ride for weeks now.
I have been using malaseb shampoo every few days and alternating with Daktarin fungal spray and now getting there slowly
