Trailers - Advice Please!

We have just bought a car that has the ability to tow (it's a 3 litre Rexton if this is relevant at all) so are now looking at a second hand trailer to go with it. Up until now we have always hired a 3.5t lorry or shared lifts with friends so it will be amazing to finally have our own transport. Does anyone have any advice on the best trailers to look at or any other hints and tips on trailer ownership? Pony is 14.1 but is full up and quite substantial. He loads well and has traveled in trailers before. Thanks in advance for any advice!

For your first trailer go for an ifor 505. I don’t know the towing/breaking capacity for the car you mention. However the 505 is more than adequate for a pony of the size you have. I have a section D of the same size and he travels beautifully in a 505

Do you require towing two?
I had an ifor mare and foal which was amazing. It was exactly the width of the car, very stable as the weight was central rather than one sided and every horse travelled well as they could find their own balance with more space.

I was sceptical but it’s the best trailer I’ve had, held it’s value so well I got more for it when I sold than purchased!

We’ve got an Ifor HB403 (mare and foal) and it’s brilliant - easy to tow, it’s slightly narrower than my large estate so it’s great to know that if the car can get through so can the trailer! The stall width is one and a half times the standard stall width in a double so dhorse has plenty of room and loads and travels like a dream. It was comparatively expensive as second hand ones are quite rare but we won’t lose anything when we sell as they keep their value so it was by far the cheapest way to get dhorse out and about

We have an Ifor too, and while they’re fantastic trailers, check your equine travels ok in them as lots get very unbalanced (my mare falls all over in ours and on investigation it seems to be very common).

Thanks for all the suggestions! Technically I only need the space for one but I was initially thinking that having the extra room for a second pony was probably a bonus. I hadn't considered the mare and foal option but it sounds like this might be the most sturdy and comfortable for DPony. He travels very well at the moment and has traveled without issues before in a trailer so I want to make sure that this continues :-)

Good choice of towing vehicle - tows better than a discovery in my experience. I'm guessing that you can tow 3.2t with it if it's an older model? Personally I'm not a fan of the older ifor williams trailers, but there's loads of them out there. I've not used a new one. I'd go for a rice/richardson for a smoother ride and wood floors AS LONG AS THEY'RE KEPT IN GOOD REPAIR give a much nicer, quieter, less rattling travel experience.

I would also go for an ifor 505 or 403.

Just about to also buy my own. Looking at a 505 myself.
