Hello, my daughter wants to enter a Showing competition at our local gymkhana and I have no idea what's involved in the preparation, actual competition and what she should wear. I assume pony should be plaited and sparkling clean, ditto daughter, but what do we actually do in the competition? Can anyone help please?

If it is novice ridden, they would walk and trot round as a group - DO NOT OVERTAKE circle to the back if needed. Then pulled in by the judge and do a simple individual display, walk, trot and canter on both reins, halt and salute to indicate the end of the show. Normally sent out for another walk round while the judge decides on places then they are called in.
If it is a standard ridden class as above but they canter round together and the change of rein is in the canter section but they trot the diagonal.
Pony, snaffle bridle, saddle with brown black or white numnah in shape of the saddle not a square, with a brown, black or white girth. (no bling)
Rider, velvet hat, hair in hairnet, shirt and tie, blue show jacket or tweed, canary johdpurs, brown short boots with joddy clips and gloves (ideally brown)

@KitKat6, thank you! I'm off to beg, borrow and steal a saddle shaped numnah and de-sparkle our bridle. Much appreciated!

She needs to wear a tweed jacket, beige jodhpurs, a tie collar with a tie (pony club ones look good for lower level) I buy all my kids riding wear from www.equetech.com

Hi OP. It would be helpful to know which ridden class your daughter is entering as some have different requirements to others.

As you say, pony, tack and child should be clean and tidy. How you turn out really depends on the pony's type and the class. So if he's a M&M or a hairy cob then you would not be expected to plait or trim for example.

Again, your daughters outfit will depend on what you are doing (so tweed for M&M, working hunter type, coloured etc and blue of black jacket for riding pony, hack) Neat hair, velvet hat or hat silk to match the jacket, gloves, discreet numnah and minimal bling or fuss. At local level it's not really a huge problem if you don't look completely correct so don't worry too much, the judge will be more concerned with the pony's way of going, and your daughter's riding.

As the previous poster said, most classes will have the entrants walk, trot and canter as a group (if it's a junior class you may not be required to canter and if your daughter doesn't feel confident to do this then just let the stewards know - they will usually allow you to wait in the middle of the ring) The judge will then call everyone in and you then do your individual show. This doesn't need to be fancy, just walk away from the judge and then trot back. Trot a figure of eight and then canter on each rein. Come back to walk and halt and salute before the judge.

The most important thing is that your daughter wears a big smile and has lots of fun!! Please let us know if you need anymore info x

Hello - thanks to everyone who has replied it's been very helpful.

The show class title is '14.2 and under - Open class for riding ponies'. There is a Mountain and Moorland class but we have a Connie X so didn't think we'd be eligible for that.

I don't want to spend a fortune on new kit for what is essentially a bit of fun. I don't think showing is something we'd be doing seriously or often. With the in mind, would it be ok to have a tweed jacket for the Ridden Comp, plus we don't have short riding boots, just long ones? Thanks again.

Hmm if he's a connie type then mountain and moorland would be correct (connies are a large M&M breed), if a finer type OR if they have to be registered for the M&M, then riding pony. Is he trimmed and with pulled mane/tail or does he have feathers? Do you have a pic you can post? Or ask your instructor which she thinks?

For kit, technically short boots and navy jacket are correct for a show pony turn out, M&M and hunter types wear tweed IIRC. Children aren't meant to wear long boots until they are in intermediate or adult classes - how old is your DD?

BUT as it's a local friendly show I doubt it'll matter, so long as they look clean and smart it'll be fine. You will probably see all sorts which would make the 'proper' showing types turn pale including blingy bridles and numnahs, black jackets, flash nosebands etc. Enjoy!
